The rules are a bit vague when it comes to the set up of the maze (i.e. how long can players study it before playing? who sets up the maze? etc.). Also, it can sometimes be an advantage to run into a wall on purpose, say if the player's starting square is close to the desired prize. Here are a few modifications we use:
1. During set up, players take turns placing a wall. Walls must be placed immediately. 2. After all walls are placed, players have 15 seconds to look at the completed maze before the garden level is added. The die is rolled, and the board is spun clockwise 90 degrees * the number on the die. 3. If a player hits a wall, the opponent to his right chooses the corner where he restarts. 4. If a newly drawn prize is placed on the same square as a player's piece, that player gets the prize (as stated in the rules), but he skips his next turn.

We have the player declare where they are going before they move their piece. That way there is no temptation to change course when they feel a wall coming.

Great suggestions — these address some of the things about the game that I've thought were potentially unfair.
