Subject: 2011 Family Addition - Not "Compatible" With Expansion? rss

I just bought a version of the original on Amazon (the box art on the Amazon page was the ordinary horizontal box art with the plastic totem) and then bought a copy of the expansion.

But when I received both, I noticed that the base version of the game was updated in design:

"Family" edition
Age: 8+
Minute: 15
Players: 2-10

All the cards are the same, but they have a much different design from the original cards (both front and back). And because the expansion's cards are designed to be similar to the original, the two sets stand out drastically.

Has anyone played with this "new" 2011 version with the expansion? Does it impact play at all? (I could foresee players figuring out that base and expansion cards are never the same when played after each other.)

Unfortunately you are correct. I mentioned this in another post about a month ago.

I also submitted a new version detailing the 2011 edition of the base game, but it has not been approved.

You would not be able to combine the 2011 base game with the existing expansion. I contacted Asmodee about this issue and they said that they notified all resellers to note that the new version is not compatible, but obviously this has not been done by many people. They also stated that a new release of the expansion that is compatible with the 2011 edition is not planned for anytime in the next year.

I would recommend you start by contacting Amazon about it and see if they can help you with a return/refund due to misrepresentation (assuming that they claimed the two were compatible).
