My son and I have been having a lot of fun with the iOS Monopoly lately, and I'm thinking of picking up a physical set for the first time in decades. It's very difficult to google for information given the sheer magnitude of gimmicky editions out there. Around a year ago I saw a Platinum Edition. Is this one any good? I also see a Deluxe Edition but it's very expensive - worthwhile or not? I guess I'm looking for a rundown on the traditional editions that are out there. No Lord of the Rings or Family Guy Monopoly, please. Many thanks to anyone who can help!
(By the way, if you have nothing nice or useful to contribute please don't comment in this thread. I've heard it all regarding how awful this game is, how it's "all luck", how it's a dinosaur, how there are better games...I've played hundreds of games, so I know what's out there. I don't want to hear it. Wish I didn't even have to write this but I see it happens in other threads.)

Hmm. What do you mean by "best"? Are you talking components or gameplay? I *know* there's a Monopoly version (Tropical Island Monopoly???) that wasn't half-bad, and there's the Monopoly Deal card game, which is more of a set-collection game.

NeonPeon, The Monopoly game that I have, that I most like to play with others is "Monopoly City." I would not classify this game as a "gimmicky edition," as it has no theme (like Family Guy or Lord of the Rings). It comes with 80 buildings, and there are residential, industrial, bonus buildings, hazards, skyscrapers and more ! What I like most is that you do not need to own a "monopoly" (all the colors in one color group), to start building on your properties. So the game and the action start immediately !! (With traditional "Monopoly" the first half, to the first one-third, of the game is spent just buying properties with very little action).
Click here to see a quick (YouTube) TV commercial for the game: http://youtu.be/ToK6XZ04jjU
If you might be interested in this game, I recommend that you read more about it here on BGG, and also read the full set of rules on Hasbro's website. Here is the direct link to the Hasbro instructions: http://www.hasbro.com/customer-service/browse/_/Ntt-monopoly...

I hear what you say !! I can’t believe so many people (on BGG) waste so much of their time discussing why they hate a certain game. People create threads with "diversionary" titles (usually in a question form), just to get others all riled-up and to argue. People should spend their time in threads regarding games they do like and support, and not the opposite. Oh well, what can you do.
I for one, would like to directly apologize to you on behalf of BGG, for all the nonsense and "elitism" shown by some members.
Happy shopping.

I like the Monopoly with the speed die. I also have the Family Game Night edition with the trophy, which the kids like (and hey, I like it too).
I think the most important thing about playing Monopoly is playing it according to the actual rules and not by house rules and not by failing to trade properties.
The game is great fun and should only take about an hour to play if played properly.
(Side note: The LotR Monopoly game is GREAT! It isn't just the theme, the ring acts as a built in timer and also speeds up both property aquisition and the bankrupting of weaker players. But, regular Monopoly is just wonderful too.)
(Side side note: Monopoly Deal card game is funtastic!)

I bet you could pick up a Monopoly Onyx edition at an after Christmas sale at Barnes and Noble for not too much. The Onyx edition is really classy looking in my opinion and it is a basic rules game.
Sometimes you can get stuff at 50% off!

My initial intention when I wrote the post was that I wanted a basic, old school set with nice components. But now Los28's post mentioning Monopoly City has me intrigued.
Edit: So I guess I'm still learning toward the traditional game with nice components, but I'm open to variations. Keep the info coming and I'll keep the Geek Gold coming.

This one looks beautiful but I read some scathing reviews about the components being too small? Can anyone here confirm or deny?

I always liked the Star Wars Episode I version where the property tiles slide into the gameboard spaces. It makes it much easier to see what properties are owned. I don't know why they didn't do this with other editions of the game.
I don't have a copy with the speed die, but the main part is you roll a third die with special symbols that do different things. For one of the symbols, if not all properties are owned, you move to the next unowned property. If all properties are owned, you move to the next property owned by someone other than yourself. It really speeds up the game.

Thanks Chris. The speed die sounds like a useful addition to the game. Any idea which sets include it?

No idea. I played someone else's copy. It's a fairly new addition though.

Has anyone tried or heard anything about the Winning Solutions Monopoly Deluxe Edition? A bit pricy but looks really nice. Only problem is I can't find a single review on the internet. I might just settle for the Hasbro Deluxe set as I may kick myself later for spending $85 on Monopoly.

This is the current default set: Monopoly. It includes the Speed Die, which is an optional rule variant that Hasbro has now mainstreamed into the base game. You don't have to use it if you don't want to.
Hasbro's base set also includes some cosmetic changes and a couple minor rules changes implemented within the last five years. Some people who've played for a long time (like me) dislike Hasbro's recent changes. For them there's a "Classic Edition" in print: Monopoly - The Classic Edition. You can also save some money by picking up an older printing of the base game at a thrift store or garage sale. That's what I would do if I were looking for another copy.
The editions called Platinum, Deluxe, Anniversary, etc., are just the base game with fancier components.
Monopoly City is a different game. It's clearly based on Monopoly, but it is not simply a variant.
