I have just bought this game and am doing the first reading of the rulebook. A couple question arise:

1- The rules say that attacker and defender roll for each unit type simultaneously. Ok. So let's say the attacker has 2 bowmen and 1 gunner and the defender has 2 Gunner. Both bowmen hit. My guess is the defender has to eliminate his 2 Gunners. Am I right?

2- Following the same example, when it is the Gunner turn to attack, will the defender still have his 2 Gunners for a defense roll, or are they considered to be eliminated since they were killed in Step 1?

The issue is that I don't know if the simultaneity applies to the combat as a whole or it is only referring to each step.

It might seem obvious, but I'm not so used to this kind of games.

Thanks to anyone who answers!

The defender can choose which casualties he takes (for example, if he has 2 spearmen as well, he can choose to take those as casualties, they don't have to be ranged units themselves to be hit by enemy ranged units). So in your example, if he only has two gunners, both gunners are taken as casualties.

The defender will still be able to return fire with both his gunners, before he removes them from the board/army card. N.B. If he chooses to take melee units as casualties during the shooting phase, he won't be able to use them in the melee phase and vice versa!

All units of the same type (ranged and melee) roll their hits at the same time. First all ranged units (bowmen and gunners) for both players roll. Then all melee units (Daimyo, Samurai, Ronin, Spearmen). The way we solve it when playing this game: I bought some extra D12's in different colors from the ones included in the game, so I can roll all ranged dice and all melee dice at the same time (applied to your example I would roll one black die for the bowman, and two yellow dice for the gunners). The opponent does then place any casualty-miniatures on their side before making his own roll. After that casualties are removed.

I hope I have cleared this up for you?
