Got on the Dominion wagon pretty late. Now with so many expansions already out, is Intrigue still the best one to buy first? I'm also interested in Prosperity and Seaside, but am leaning towards Intrigue. What say you?

The expansions can be bought in any order.
Seaside and Prosperity are my personal faves.
Check out the main theme/mechanic that is added in each one and choose your favorite.

I think you need to be very honest with yourself here.
If you're the sort of person who will get uncontrollably hooked and end up buying all the expansions (and I'll say now they're all constructive; it's a not a Carcassonne sort of thing where the expansions got out of control), then first of all you have the sympathy of most of us. Secondly, you'd probably be best off buying Intrigue, if only because you'll go through the same process as the rest of us did.
If you feel you've got self-control, and aren't going to buy simply everything, then I'd go for Seaside or Prosperity. My personal take is that Prosperity is awesome for about 20 games but wears thin quickly, whereas Seaside is actually very clever and keeps you thinking long after you've played all the cards a few times.

I could recommend a lot of different things that I think might be best, but I personally bought everything as it came out, so I really have no experience to back up any of my suggestions other than buying in order.
In short, Intrigue works.

There is no obvious one. I recommend getting any of the large expansions as your first one, and you'll be surprised at how much better the game gets after that.

I would recommend buying seaside and prosperity last only because they change the game the most. All the expansions are worth getting but if you play the ones that change the game the least first then you can still look forward to the real game changers...

Better late than never to get on the Dominion wagon! I had a lot of friends who owned the original Dominion so I ended up buying Intrigue for myself as it is a standalone game (includes its own set of gold and victory cards etc.) I have found that I enjoyed the original Dominion cards more. I found that they were more interesting than the ones included in Intrigue. Shortly after buying Intrigue I bought Prosperity and just recently received Hinterlands for Christmas...I have played everything but Cornucopia and Alchemy. My personal fave is Hinterlands but Seaside would be a good next step as well as Prosperity. Prosperity is great because it adds Colony (11 VP) and Platinum (5 treasure) as well as a ton of cards that give you a load of cash; which I think moves the game along. I have found that the Prosperity cards also lend themselves well to combining with other sets. Overall, I haven't been disappointed by any of the Dominion expansions I have played but favor Prosperity and Hinterlands.

I bought seaside first, and personally, I feel it was the best choice. It has a thematic feel to it that the other expansions don't have. When I played intrigue, I basically felt it was more of the same and never purchased it.

Intrigue was the first expansion I bought and I still think it is the best one to buy first.

It seemed like all of my friends owned the game, so I was not going to buy it. Then a day came when I wanted to play it with friends who didn't have it, so we popped into our awesome DC local game shop Labyrinth to pick it up. I went with Intrigue over the original Dominion set because it offers more opportunity to mess with the other players, which I like. I am not planning to buy the entire game (as mentioned before, most of my friends have it), but if I were to pick an expansion it would probably be Prosperity because it's really fun to have a lot of money in the game.
FYI Only Intrigue and the original Dominion are stand alone--you need at least one of them before you can use any of the other expansions.

I picked up all of the available expansions at once. My coworker had the base game. I got Intrigue and all of the available expansions at the time (so no Hinterlands). My joy really comes from randomly combining cards from all sets. I have no favorite; you will get a ton of play, almost exponential, from just combining all sorts of cards. So get as many as you can afford now, then buy the others as soon as you can.

I only have Dominion: Hinterlands and love it.
I thought Dominion to be a bit of a bore and the expansion I have really made a difference. I'm now looking at Intrigue and Prosperity but not dying to have them.

You're dying to have Prosperity. You just don't know it yet.

The thing with Prosperity and other game-changing expansions is that it works best when you go into it already being intimately familiar with the original game (plus whatever expansions.)
I would almost recommend that new players add the expansions in original release order, but also waiting 6 months before adding each expansion in.

Yes, very much so. In fact, I'd recommend Intrigue over the base game as the first set to buy.
