Came across a situation where ruins were discovered via an encounter check. Can I no longer hunt in this hex (e.g. treat it like a town or castle)?

I'm of the opinion that I should be able to as it is an abandoned location so, in theory, the countryside has started to reclaim it and it is not inhabited.

I'm curious how others have handled this (or just the pre-printed ruins in general in regards to hunting).

Additionally, I could see a variant added that would apply -1 to the die hunting die roll when hunting in ruins.

Hi Erik

Which event was it that told you that you couldn't hunt? Without the reference it is difficult to check for you. I'm asking as I can't find a reason for not hunting in a ruins hex.

r215c says:

Hunting is prohibited in any hex with a town, castle, or temple.

No mention of ruins.

r215b says:

if you are in a farmland, countryside, forest, hill or swamp hex you can hunt for food

Again no restriction on ruins.

Thanks for the reply. There wasn't anything that said I couldn't hunt in ruins, but nothing that said I could either. I'm new to this game and just trying to wrap my head around some of the rules ... like do I still roll for events in town (the answer I discovered is yes based on some events saying if you are in a town or castle ignore this event). My preference would have been separate encounter tables for towns and castles. So, I agree with you, I can hunt in ruins (I still think there should be a penalty).

Just finished my second play through. My first one ended on day three. One against six wood elves wasn't a smart move.

I lasted a little over a week in the second. A wild cat, a bear (when I tried to heal from the wild cat), and then two disastrous hunting expeditions where I was wounded ended the prince's attempt to secure his throne.

Acquiring 500 gold pieces seems like a pretty daunting task.

No problem Erik, We are always glad to help.

I believe Arnold's basic intgention was that you can't hunt in an inhabited hexes, with farmland being the exception with the added hazards to you if you do.

You could have a house rule that adds the risk of falling masonry or distrubing something with teeth from those dark resesses (i.e. a lair) similar to when you search the ruins.

Acquire 500 gold daunting?! Only did that once by saving up. Thankfully there are other ways to win.

Oho, so there are other paths to victory. Good to know.
