Background
If you have played Vinci many times, like I have, you always wished for a Dream Team combination of attributes like Field General and Slavery, or Mining and Specialization. Unfortunately you rarely get one. Here is a variant that guarantees you will get a great combination to play for each of your empires (at least for your first few empires). All standard rules of Vinci apply to this variant except as explicitly detailed below.
1.0 Game Set Up Put one of every different Civilization Counter (Civ Counters) face up on the table next to the board. This is the Draw Pile. Take all of the rest of the duplicate Civ Counters, put them back in the bag and into the box. They will not be used for the game.
2.0 Bidding for First Empires Each Player secretly writes down how many victory points they want to bid to choose first. All players then reveal their bids. Adjust Victory Point totals down for all bids, even the lowest one. The player with the highest bid chooses any two Civilization Counters from the Draw Pile. The next highest bidders then choose two Civilization Counters from the Draw Pile until all players have chosen. Any ties are resolved by a die roll.
3.0 Turn Order Player turn order is reverse of the order in which Empire Civ Counters were chosen. The first shall go last and the last shall go first rule.
4.0 Choosing a New Empire When you choose to put your current Empire into decline, take its two Civ Counters and put them in a discard pile. Then choose any two remaining Civ Counters from the Draw Pile for your new Empire. There is no cost.
5.0 Refreshing the Civ Counters Draw Pile When there are no more counters to be chosen from in the Civ Counter Draw Pile, that is the last Civ Counter has just been chosen, then add back all of the Discard Pile Civ Counters to refresh the Civ Counter Draw Pile.
6.0 Clarifications and Rationale All duplicate Civ Counters are removed before play starts so that no empire will be fighting any other empire with the same attributes. It is also done so that a Player cannot put one empire in decline and simply choose the same empire again. The Civ Counters are removed from the game once they are used so that everyone does not simply take their turn using the Field General and Slavery. If Players could do this, the Player with the best combinations would likely also hang onto an empire too long just to prevent another Player from getting it. Similar counters where one has a broken column and the other does not are put in the Draw Pile together at the beginning of the game. These are not considered duplicate Civ Counters.
7.0 Optional Rules If you do not like this variant’s limits on your Dream Teams then eliminate the limits with one or both of these optional rules that supersede some to the rules above. A. Allow all Civ Counters to be put into play at the beginning of the game. B. Do not have a Discard Pile. When an Empire Declines, put its Civ Counters back into the Draw Pile, after choosing your new Civ Counters.
