Can you play with other kinds of vehicles aside from mechs? I thought it might be cool to be able to use tanks or something.

I suppose so, although the rules for attachments assumes a bipedal "frame". I believe new rules are in the works...perhaps vehicles are handled? ...maybe you can request them?

I would also like vehicles. Then I could have a game with these babies in it:http://www.flickr.com/photos/commanderhawk/

This is the secret of Mechaton;

Not only do you not have to use mecha, you don't even have to use LEGO. The rules say you build something and assign the parts of it dice - so why not take those toys or that model or those figures and just assign them dice?

It's very cool to see LEGO mecha, but you could build just about any sort of thing.

While waiting on the next edition of the rules, I've been doing something along these lines.

White dice can be a general sign of robustness - frames have two, but perhaps cargo trucks have one, or "boss frames" have three.

Slow trucks might get one green d6, or maybe even a d4.

Your imagination is the limit!
