Do most people play this game with Tactics cards? I just received the game today and played 4 games without them. We really enjoyed the game as well. Am I missing out by not including the Tactics cards? It just seems like including the Tactics cards would just increase the randomness of the game, although I realize that wise usage of those cards could be vital in turning the tide of the game.

See...

Why the Tactics Cards are Absolutely Vital to this game...

Seriously, yes, we play with the tactics cards all the time.

If you want to play Schotten-Totten remove the tactics cards and the 10's and play with a hand of 6 cards instead of seven. Quite a different feel. With the tactics cards, the extra number is necessary because some tactics allow you to remove cards.

In the mathematically-balanced Schotten-Totten nine columns times six cards per column (three per side) equals the whole deck (six suits times nine numbers), so every card is used (potentially, of course).

I see the Tactics cards as reducing randomness. Between good players, the core game too often comes down to which player draws the winning card first. The tactics cards allow players an opportunity to circumvent that draw-dependence.

I play with them whenever I have the chance.

We play mostly without the tactics cards (and we have played A LOT). That said, we are glad to have the choice and occasionally we will include them for a bit of variety.

Thanks for the replies. I played a few more games tonight with the tactics cards included, and enjoyed the game even more. This is a really good game! The last game we played came down to the final flag. Fun times.
