Obviously this is just my opinion and you are free to believe otherwise, but I think your friends were spot on with how they see what you did.

Any conclusion of "oh well, I will never win this" Midgame in Galactica is completely pointless, as the wildest swings have been seen both ways depending on play and crisises coming up.
Especially if you then decide to make it a "if you hurt me I will take you down with me" thing that is never defensible even if you were right about it. It's what I would call a terribly sore looser.

Also "I will ruin this game for you so I can threaten you with it next game" is poor form to the nth degree in my book.

So, yes, at our game night that kinda play would give you a decent chance of not getting an invitation for next time.

Join the Colonials is a bit of a broken agenda. Most of the pbf games around here have either replaced it or thrown it out completely.

I do agree with chrisdk when he says what you did was unsporting. Really, you may have been better off revealing early and brigging the president or admiral, or even the symp, since the humans have no reason to trust the symp.

The best advice I can give is remember that it's a game. The point is to have fun and a good time, while trying to win.

But the Sympathizer won anyway, right? So your plan didn't work at all.

I disagree - in any game with three or more sides in which any side can harm any other side, A asking for B to help A against C on the threat of A attacking B instead if B refuses is the most basic of diplomatic strategies. I guess Diplomacy isn't exactly your game.

Actually, I kinda like diplomatic games and the threat of "you help me or I attack you instead of him" is quite valid. But it should be made from a position of actual strength and not one of "I have this one trick that can possibly if all things go right ruin your game in a few hours if I spend all that time playing as if I don't want to win afterall." It's no wonder that the other guy called the bluff (Or to say it nicer: didn't think it was a big threat which he was proven right about in the end, too).
The threat of "help me or I will only make sure that you loose with me to the exclusion of trying to win myself which will also make this game tremendously unfun for everyone else" is what really pushes my buttons. This threat is either empty and pointless or bad form in my experience as most multi-sided games go totally haywire if one of the players decides that his objective isn't winning anymore but taking down another player with him.
And then spending all game in the brig to have a shot at making that threat come true to be more credible in future games may be a sound strategy for the meta game but would still be considered bad form around our group and would likely ruin the game and the night for everyone.

And as to the actual balance problem in the game: I cannot actually speak from experience for that as we never play 4-player games and the effect doesn't seem to be all that pronounced in a 6 player game, which is our usual Cylon Leader size. We don't actually allow a leader in 5 player games either unless we can't get a sixth player and one REALLY wants to play one.

It's not even a "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" type deal either. It's "I need for you to deliberately decrease your chances of winning so that I may increase mine." Of course the Cylon Leader didn't go for that deal! If he had, it would have put him in a lose/lose situation.

He won, so he didn't do anything wrong at all.

Why would you willingly stay in the Brig, when you can only play 1 card ot get out, and all other players can throw in as much as they like to keep you there?

The humans win was probably a foregone conclusion anway with that setup, but that's no reason to make things easy for them. If you have enough of a problem with the slanted game balance that you're willing to throw the game, don't play BSG with 4 players in the first place.
