I have only joined up yesterday, so I can't really tell you any details...

It alsa can give you recommendations based on other peoples likes that liked the same things you did, similarly to the last.fm service for music.

I love what you can do on Goodreads. It's a great tool as a teacher/librarian, having your class sign up on a group on goodreads and then have discussions about what they are reading.
Personally, I like to look back at what I've read (since Dec. 31 2007, long before I joined the Geek actively). I also have most of the books I own on there, although I need to update it. After I move into my own place. After I graduate a return to the States/Canada.

GoodReads -> ThePrussian
Looking for those interested in military history. I have a preference for WWII history, but do not limit myself to that particular period if there is a good read in other periods.
When taking a break from history I also read SciFi, Fantasy and religious studies with an interest in the philosophy of enlightenment (both East & West). Yeah I know a bit eclectic...

Have you read Taylor Anderson? He writes alternative history/fantasy WWII era novels. Sounds like something you would enjoy.

Zeppo, I haven't read Taylor Anderson. I'll check out his books. Don't know if you like historical fiction spy novels, but if you do highly recommend Alan Furst. Thanks again for the tip!

I just want to say, God, on behalf of all of us thank you for all of the good things we do in your name, like charity and forgiveness. That’s an idea we would never come up with. That’s for sure. You know that better than anybody.

I'm Simon Stone on Goodreads. My debut novel The Shadowed Path, a fantasy, came out last October.
http://www.amazon.com/Shadowed-Path-Archwood-Chronicles-eboo...
You can download the first few chapters for free if you like.
If you want a signed 1st edition tradepaperback (in the hopes that one day I'll become unbelievably famous and it'll be worth something) let me know. And yes that last comment might have been better off in the "I will make you laugh for gold" thread!!
Seriously though I've had some pretty good reviews so far, none of whom know me or have any relationship to me!
Oh yeah, and my link to Goodreads: http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/5231330.Simon_Stone
EDIT: Just found out I can't do discount codes on Amazon any more. Am looking into other ways of giving a discount.

I don't think I'm a Sam Harris fan. His short essay Lying was, essentially, "lying is bad no matter what." Which, while true... I don't know. I understand and agree with the principle that lying to spare someone's feelings is not being a good friend (not that I've done that). But he gave a situation where a man didn't want his wife's friends to stay with them, and when one of the friends thanked him he said "glad to have you!" only to have his daughter say "no, you said you didn't want them here." Isn't that so awkward, he said? Yes, but what's the alternative? "Yeah, well, I didn't want you here but I lost that argument." That's so much less awkward.
More to the point, I'm chugging very slowly through The End of Faith. I think his writing style is too... dense or flowery? Not particularly easy to read, and what he's saying isn't grabbing me very much. But that's neither here nor there; this isn't RSP.
