I have the original TTR and Nordic Countries. I enjoy both versions and love how they play based on the number of players (the additional rules in Nordic Countries are a nice addition as well). I would like to get one more expansion/version. I tend to play with smaller groups (2-4, the most common being just my wife and me), so I would definitely lean toward maps that play well with fewer people. While this is probably going to be a subjective question, what would people suggest out of the remaining games (Europe, Marklin, or the two new map collections)? For the money, the expansions are probably great, but do the additional rules in Europe or Marklin give them an edge?

The additional rules of Europe and Marklin make them more complicated than necessary, IMO. And there's plenty of extra rules for you in Switzerland.... which is in India & Switzerland, my suggestion for you. Both maps are meant for fewer players (2-4 for India, 2-3 for Switzerland) and play great, especially India. The Asia maps are also great but clearly meant for more players. The map collections are MUCH more for your money than the base sets.
Edit: I should add, and I'll expound more in my eventual review, but for several reasons I think India is probably the best 2-player map yet.

What I would have said, only not as well.

Agreed.

Switzerland is just a variant of Nordic Countries (or the other way round), while India is a nice change of pace with the myriad of shorter routes. The Asia maps are nice, but ihmo not that exciting as others. My favorite versions are Europe (+ Europa 1912 expansion) and Märklin. They are the more complete versions and less simplistic and provide enough variations to be both worth owning.

I don't dislike Europe or Marklin but I have to disagree that those are the maps to get for fewer players.
If your 2p games are anything like ours, the biggest frustration is when the tableau becomes chock full of things no one wants. Part of that problem is that you need SIX of a color quite often on the US map, and Marklin makes that even worse with many 7-length routes.
The great thing about India is that the tableau rarely gets stale for two reasons: 1) The Mandala bonus means you want a TON of routes as soon as you start, so you see many colors that you need, 2) The routes are relatively short, and the 1-length routes are very colorful, so you see many DIFFERENT colors that you need, more OFTEN.
That's my main reason for saying it's the best 2p map yet. It's tense and interesting path-wise as well, with several choke points, but most importantly, the game doesn't drag.

I'll also add consider playing with 1912 add-on (one module is a superset of Destination Tickets only for the Europe map, but the Warehouse module works for all TtR games with a board).
I've never played it before, but the Alvin & Dexter add-on I hear has some nastiness AND fun to the whole deal.
It seems Asia should be fine with fewer players, but I'll have to edit this when I get more plays at the lower range.
In the end, I find merits to all versions (the major expanions) of TtR. Europe isn't that much more complicated, and Marklin is still on the level. It's a nice change of pace to have a "path finding" type mechanic thrown in with the Passengers and weighing the question of tension of "go now to play it safe, or wait a bit and get more pts/benefits?"

In my opinion the Europe version is the best version of Ticket to Ride, and the most perfect game I have ever played. But, it's always a disappointment when playing with two players, as you often play on different parts of the map and if you happen to collide somewhere, you fix it with a station. I'm not much of a fan of blocking and hard interaction between players, but some is necessary.
I always prefer to play Nordic countries or Legendary Asia with two players, and actually also the original USA/Canada version (which I really dislike with more than two players, as you can too easily be shut off from destinations – here I miss the stations). India and Switzerland I haven't played yet, but when I read earlier comments, I really long to do it. (Definitely a "must have" right now!)
The Märklin Edition I have never played, but I must say I'm a little sceptic towards the passenger addition. It might change the original simplicity too much (but as I said, I have never played it or watched it being played).
Must say I like this thread, with many interesting views and angles!

For 2-4 Definitely India and Switzerland for the reasons state above.
If you more often play with 4 than 2 then Asia could be a good bet if you would like the variety of playing in teams and the ability to accommodate 6 occasionally.
Legendary asia can make for a relatively tight and interesting 2-3 player game and the 2-Track-4-Train mountain passes mean you can run down the clock even if the draw cards are stale. It makes for a quicker game BUT... 30 Tickets and 6 long means it could get old pretty fast.
It is always easier to find 1 opponent then 3 so I would go with India. 58 tickets no longs and mandalas means lots of variability. Worst thing about 2 player TTR is stagnant face up draw cards and India seems to remedy this.
