I have never played Shadows over Camelot, but it's on my wishlist along with dozens of other games. I like the Days of Wonder (DoW) games I have played (Ticket to Ride and Memoir '44), but I am now well aware of what happens to their expansions and components when they go out of print (OOP). DoW will never print them again. (Sadly, I'm just finding out about BattleLore.)
That being said, I see on the DoW site that SoC: A Company of Knights is out of print. Under their usual practices, I assume this set will never be re-printed. Now, I have seen A Comany of Knights at my FLGS every time I go in for the past few months. It's a little hidden on a bottom shelf, but it's there.
The trouble is, it's marked for $30. On DoW's site, it looks like the original MSRP was $20. But now that it's OOP, It doesn't look like you can get this set very easily, and if so, it's $60 or more. ($60 currently on BGG auction, no current eBay auctions for it, and not listed on Amazon.)
My question to you fine folks is, should I pick this up without knowing if I like the game?
Is this the type of game where if you play it a few times, you really wish you had the painted mini's? Do the painted mini's bring anything to the game? Should I pick it up for resale value, or to make a trade on BGG?
The price seems high at $30, and in looking through these forums, people seemed to think that the price was high at $20 when it was released, but if the going rate is $60, maybe I should jump on it.
I ran into this issue with Memoir '44. This same FLGS had Memoir '44: Campaign Book Volume 1, Memoir '44: Air Pack, and Memoir '44: Operation Overlord a few months back. I had never played Memoir '44 at the time, but I knew I wanted to, and I knew the campaign book was OOP, so I bought it (not yet knowing that OOP for DoW meant OOP forever.) Unfortunately, I did not know about the Air Pack and Operation Overlord being OOP at the time. Now I love Memoir '44 and I'm kicking myself that I didn't pick those up. Luckily, I picked up the Memoir '44: Campaign Bag last week at this same FLGS. (Yes, I will probably be trying to be a Memoir '44 completist very soon.)
Normally, I would just grab SoC: A Company of Knights for $30, no questions asked. But with a new baby, and my wife not going back to work this year, I really need to watch my spending in 2012. The only way I'll really get any new games this year is for my birthday, Christmas, and through BGG trades and math trades.
So I'm leaving it up to you all. Thanks for your input!

No. If you later decide to buy Shadows over Camelot you can paint the included miniatures. The only knight that is not included in the base game and is in the Company of Knights is Sir Bedivere. It is not worth $30...
And you can still get him with Spielbox 3/2005 for 5,30€ plus shipping:

Well, so far yours is the only voice that spoke up and unfortunately fortunately it is the voice of reason. Therefore, I made through day one of this conundrum without buying A Company of Knights.
Until someone else speaks up...

Are you a painter? If not, are you going to buy $100+ worth of brushes and paint and spend the dozens of hours to learn and then do it? Personally, I think painted minis make a huge difference to play with. So much nicer to use.
If you genuinely think you're going to get the game down the road, then it's worth doing. At worst, you can re-sell it before then if times get tough.

Uh oh. Day two and another reasonable voice has perched itself on my other shoulder. This is going to be tough.

I couldn't even make it two days and I got it. Oh well, thanks for the input.
