One of the biggest time guzzlers when we get this baby on the table is the long set-up time. I'd like to be able to the set-up myself and have the factions/colors randomly distributed to the players.

The main thing is I want a balanced start map - does anyone know of a province distribution that makes sure no one faction gets a uber-advantage?

Work out how many players there are.

Start at one end of the map and give each player, in turn, a province card.

There will still be some groupings, but not as bad as a random setup.

You should check out the quick start rules in the back of the rule book. They are very balanced and knock out a lot of the setup time. They also start with more units for the armies, which can speed things along.
