I just got the latest newsletter from Stronghold Games and there was absolutely no mention of Merchant of Venus. I worry that the lack of news means that they may have abandoned their efforts to publish their edition of the game.
Of course, the lack of comments may simply be the best course of action as lawyers sort through ownership and copyright legalities.
Does anyone else have any insights?

The fact that Fantasy Flight is still talking about launching the game, and Stronghold has been completely silent on the issue for the past couple of months, is probably all we need to know here.

I agree that this is all the "news" we've heard lately. However, as for what we can infer from the above: very little. Legal wrangling and negotiations can be a media black hole. Don't assume too much.

After listening to an interview with Stephen B in which he talked about the issue I noticed his confidence about the whole thing. My guess is that they will be getting some kind of royalties from it and maybe some credit to them and the designer... just me trying to start a rumour.

FFG stated that in their original contract with Hasbro that the designer was designated some royalties. So, that's one rumor you don't need to worry about.

I thought that Fantasy Flight was doing it apart from the designer and got the license through Hasbro. Why would they be giving him money if he were dealing with Stronghold?

It was stated that there was money allocated in the hasbro deal which was passing through to the designer.

It may be that FFG are just generous. But the more likely reason is that the documents that Hasbro have that they believe gives them the rights to the game specify a payment to the designer.

They've backed down and won't be reprinting it, to answer the OP. I'm sure they'll be compensated in some fashion.

Definitely speculation. I think its safe to say that once its settled one way or the other the winner will make sure everyone knows it.

Which could be both of them, of course. By which I mean that they may both feel that they have 'won' or, at least, come out of it 'in profit' however that is judged.

...and it's the most helpful comment so far. The companies are probably still negotiating an arrangement everyone can live with and it would make no sense to comment publicly until a deal is concluded. Until then, there is nothing to say, so they're not saying anything.

I've received an email from UK online supplier Games Lore that this is now available for pre-order - "expected Feb-12(Liable to change without notice". Cost is 40 of our English pounds. (RRP 48)
It goes without saying that it's the FFG edition [so why say it then? - Ed]
It will be interesting to see how well FFG have done in updating this. I've been buying too many games lately (not that there is such a thing as too many games - but there is such a thing as too little money or too little shelf space) - so I'll wait to see some reviews before making a decision on this one. It's nice to see the spirit of Avalon Hill living on in some form or another. In that sense I wasn't too concerned who brought this one out.

Breath, it should not be held. Expect to see a bit announcement on the front page of FFG's website if the legal stuff ends in their favor. They're are a big enough company that they are going to keep going through the motions (like releasing pricing info to stores leading to some stores putting up preorders) until its settled. So long as neither company makes a big announcement assume the legal stuff isn't wrapped up yet.

Thoughthammer is taking pre-orders for FFGs version. I think that's a pretty good indication that it's coming out from them.
