Hi All,

As I live in India I don;t get to play all these wonderful games beforehand and then buy hence rely on BGG and ll you people before buying games....and haven't been disappointed till date with the kind of advise and insights by all of you. I know that this is a classic, but just so that I can have a reference point, I'm trying to stack some of the games I own into different categories as I see them in terms of game weight/depth. Please note that this is my way of stacking up games and no scientific/mathematical method adopted. I request you all to please stack Acquire into one of the categories, which might help me decide if I should own this game.

Light Games- Mostly fillers, party styled games. Some that I own are: Bang, Werewolves of Miller's Hollow, No Thanks!, Citadels, Fearsome Floors, The Resistance etc.

Light- Medium Games- Some depth and thinking to do, but not too much, fairly easy to pick up and lasts about 60-90 min. As I see that games that I own which I feel belong here are- Thurn and Taxis, Tobago, Clue, Code 777, Jambo, Caesar and Cleopatra, Dominion, 7 Wonders, Ra, Tikal, Samurai, Lords of Vegas etc

Medium- Here the rules set is also a little more details, more complex and heavier then the previous category and some might take longer to play. Here I own and classify: Louis XIV, Agricola, Puerto Rico, Notre Dame, Modern Art, Power Grid: Factory Manager, El Grande, Neuroshima Hex, Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation- Deluxe Edition, Innovation, Glory to Rome, Princes of Florence etc.

Medium-Heavy- These are games that require serious thinking and the rules set may be complex and takes time for people to pick up and play as well. IMO the games that I own that fall into this category are: Steam, Troyes, Automobile, First Train to Nuremberg, Power Grid (purely on the time taken), Macao, Commands & Colors: Ancients, Dungeon Twister etc.

Heavy Games- As the name suggests these games are complex, involved, take time to learn and play or play very long (over 2 hrs). Some games that I own in this category are: Brass, Caylus, Twilight Struggle, Tigris and Euphrates, Imperial, Poseidon, 18AL,Through the Ages, Earth Reborn, Decent, Arkham Horror etc.

I've listed so many games to just give you a flavor of my perception of the games which might help you categorize Acquire in that perspective. Not sure if this helps, but though I love playing all sort of games, these days I'm getting more and more inclined towards the last 2 categories (>heavier games).

Thanks a lot for your help.

Best Regards,
Madhu

I'd compare it to games in either your Light-Medium or Medium categories. Given the somewhat limited strategic control your hand of tiles often affords you, probably more the former than the latter.

Your medium and medium-heavy categories seem backwards, to me.

Nevertheless, Acquire is a medium game, at best, weight / complexity wise.

Do not think that its simplicity means the game has no depth; quite the contrary, in fact.

Acquire was published 50 years ago and remains one of the best ten or so games in publication today.

Stripping away a bit of the theme, Acquire is similar in nature and depth to Go, Through the Desert and to a minimal extent - Tigris & Euphrates. It is a classic game and well worth your time.

BTW you can find the rules online and read them to get a better feel yourself. The rules are not long.

My opinion: it's a good game, justifiably considered a modern classic. Simple rules, interesting strategy. It does have luck.

Madhu, Acquire fits very well in your light-medium category. It's a great game compared to ones being published now, and a spectacular one for the time it was created.

Thanks a lot for the comments. I also checked out 2 video reviews here and now kind of in the midst of what to do. There are certain aspects like the T&E element of consuming companies that I like, there is the random element of tile drawing like a Carcassone, but because you've 6 tiles might be reduced a little bit, but still finding a little light.

However I know this is a classic so....that's that!

I should be able to decide shortly if I'll get this or not, but the inputs definitely helped.

Thanks,
Madhu
