If the Thunderstone is in rank 2, and you can't defeat rank 1 monster but want to force an ending to the game, can you attack and lose to rank 1? If you do, what happens to the monster and the thunderstone (in addition to destroying your heroes)?
a- The monster stays in rank 1 and nothing happens. b- The monster goes to the bottom of the pile. Thunderstone is claimed by active player. c- The monster goes to the bottom, and Thunderstone breaches and nobody can claim it, "it goes to the villagers". d- The monster and the Thunderstone both go to the bottom of the pile.

c and/or d - both have the same net effect.

Option C. See p.14 of the v1.4 rules. "The game ends when the Thunderstone card reaches Rank 1 of the Dungeon Hall. If you defeated a Monster in Rank 1 on your turn, and this causes the Thunderstone to move into that open rank, then you take the Thunderstone and add it to your deck! If not, then no one can claim the Thunderstone." I.e. if you lose to the Rank 1 monster (and it goes to the bottom of the deck per normal), then the Thunderstone breaches and the game ends, with noone claiming the Thunderstone.
Exceptions to this would be: 1. If you can't attack the Rank 1 monster (e.g. it's a Blink Dog, and you don't have enough light). 2. If the monster is exempt from retreating to the bottom of the deck following its victory. 3. If you use a dungeon effect to cause the Thunderstone to breach, in which case the game ends immediately. 4. If you use a dungeon effect to move the Rank 3 monster to Rank 2 (and therefore the Thunderstone to rank 3), in which case following the resolution of the battle, the Thunderstone still has not breached.

Only if you consider the Thunderstone going to the bottom of the deck a game-ending condition.

Why would you need to destroy your heroes? As part of the monster's battle effect maybe, but not from losing.

As part of the monster's battle effect maybe, but not from losing. DS and forward says that as a global rule, heroes with 0 or less strength get destroyed at the end of a battle. If it's a lv3 hero or any other that gives VP, then thta's one case it would matter.

Perhaps in the solo game? ... no, IIRC, the TS stays put, so the Village woudln't get the score (which would be negative points against you)

Why are we assuming a hero is losing strength though? Are you talking about a specific Thunderstone that takes strength?
