This just in,
I've "finished" my Google-App-Inventor version of Five-Player Werewolf for the Android Operating system.
Why this is cool: main reason is that 5 player wolf can now be EASILY played with ONLY 5 PLAYERS! that's right! no moderator required!
The game is TEXT BASED & STANDALONE (1 phone only required)
So why this announcement?
I'm trying to gauge interest in releasing this program, I built it because i hated needing 6 people for a 5 player game that i love soooo much... but i knew other plp might like it too. I would have just added it to the android marketplace already, but there is a $25 registration fee to join...
I know that I would have dropped $3-$5 dollars before i made this program to not need a sixth person (i even made an elaborate card system as a temporary fix), but i'm not sure how many others people share my sentiments (it's not like 5 player werewolf is the most well known game)...
Game Play
Basically, player names are inputted, roles are revealed to each player separately, (the phone takes care of "SEE(s)" for the SEER, and the SORCERER...
then people can start talking and playing the game... once a person is decided on to be lynched, just enter it into the phone, then the phone kicks off the second night phase... once the wolf is killed or 2 people are left, then the phone reveals the winning team along with the associated roles. It allows for a quick "new game" to restart a next game with the same (or slightly modified) peeps.
I have some built in delays, and sequences so that you cant tell someones role just by how long they hold the phone
Programming in the language formally known as "google app inventor"
It took a lot of time to program for these reasons, 1) after i finished the 1st night phase, the 1st dead player could moderate the rest of the game.. so the game could technically be played with just 5 people 2) google app inventor gets exponentially more time consuming to code the more code involved
reasons i finished, 1) app inventor was announced shut down at the end of 2011... aka a deadline 2) it was annoying to explain to new people how to moderate the 2nd night phase
I'd imagine that the program will work perfectly with any android phone with = (480x800 screen resolution). It will probably be just fine if you have better resolution, just some things might not be centered... if your resolution is less then that, some stuff may get cut off
I've tested the program rather thoroughly, and it works great, the only thing that stinks is that i can't make any changes until MIT hosts their own APP-INVENTOR site...
Errata
Not too much to more to say other than I love having 5player wolf at my finger tips... I went on a class trip to turkey in october and my class and i had a blast playing the game (that was when i only had the first night phase done, but it was still a great time)
please let me know what you think and if you'd be interested in this app being released.
Thanks!!!

i checked on the kindle fire, it has a screen resolution of 1024 x 600, which is better than 480x800... the numbers are reversed, but i don't think that would matter...
so i'd say if you can get android running on the kindle fire that *most likely* the app would work.
Edit: I also just added a poll, since it seems that that would be appropriate

Very interesting idea. Unfortunately it has pretty limited usefulness if it can only handle exactly five players. Would also prefer something that would look good on a tablet as well, but that isn't a deal breaker.

Thanks for the perspective... once i started getting this rolling, i definitively considered adding a 7 and 9 player mode, the main difficulty was the programming language (it's a graphical drag and drop interface that is cool at first, but becomes ridiculously more convoluted the more that features are added)...
One day I may end up adding those modes, but i'd probably switch over to a text based programming language.
As for the 5 player limited usefulness, I view it slightly differently... IMHO, I view "5 player wolf" as the best implementation of werewolf... I love 15-20 player wolf at conventions, but 5 player wolf is just a good (or better) and it is sooo portable... The main difficultly with playing "5 player wolf" is that either you have exactly 5 plp and therefore no one can moderate, or you have 6 people and you play something else so no one is left out... hence the app

I would be interested in trying the app, but I wouldn't pay for an app made in appinventor sorry.

lol, thanks for the candid response... i'd never claim this was one of the more beautiful apps... just that it serves an extremely viable function (1 less person required). analogous to "the clapper", not beautiful, but functional and effective.

This seems strange to me. If an app was fun, or served a useful purpose, then what's the problem? That it was too "easy" for the dev? I figure we're paying the the product... not simply rewarding the difficulty.
If it's the fact that you feel you could do it yourself, I still don't see that as a viable reason. There's something to be said for paying for convenience. Just my 2 cents.

I'm thinking 15 people or April 15th... whichever comes first...
*edit: 15 interested android owners*

I checked "Yes, but I don't have an Android phone."
If it does work on the Kindle Fire, however, I would probably pick it up...

So I'm up talking with my boyfriend about my trip to Turkey in October and how we stayed up ALLLLL night playing wolf. I told him about the mind games people have to play to convince everyone to spare their lives! I was looking for the app so that we could invite people over to play again. Carl you are genius!!!
