Is there a set official number of each promo that should be used in the center deck? I realize that some are pretty "boss" and should only have one, but I have 2 rat kings, 3 control rooms, 2 soul collectors and 2 leprechauns, for example. I'm just curious.

I am not sure if there is an "official" ruling in this. Generally I have added 3 cards of rune/power 3 or less, 2 cards of rune/power 4-5, and 1 of anything higher.

This is what I do also. I believe this is the same breakdown for all the original cards in the game.

Along similar lines I am wondering if there are some of the promo cards that you guys think should not be included for "serious play"...

Vortex is undoubtedly an offender for this, along the same lines as Falling Star/Chaos Orb from MtG.

Of the others I think that Control Room may be a little bit too good at what it does and the Leprechauns may be problematic when playing with all expansions mixed in due to deck dilution....

what do you guys think?

I asked this same question to Gary Games and the official answer is that there is no official number of promos per set/deck.

Based on balance, I have used this:

Kythis, the Gatekeeper x1 card (cost is 7)
Rat King x1 complete promo pack (cost is 6/1)
Pathwarden x1 card (cost is 6)
Leprechaun x1 complete promo pack (cost is 4)
Vedah, Sage of Swords x1 card (cost is 7)
Journeyman Sage x2 cards (cost is 4)
Soul Collector x1 card (cost is 6)
Nethersnare x2 cards (cost is 3)
Void Messmer x1 card (cost is 6)
Control Room x1 card (cost is 5)
Deep Drone x2 cards (cost is 4)

And my "custom" portal deck is 192 cards with all 3 sets.

Personally I like 2x Pathwarden, but that's because I like the deck that they enable so I want them available often and to occasionally live the dream of having two in my deck.
