My cousin's husband emailed me this question on a ruling. I'm not sure which way to go. I can see valid points in both arguments.
OK. Question. We were playing Guillotine and my wife and I came to an impasse. She had played the "no one can alter the line" card. There were 2 cards left so I played the "The day ends card". My card states that the day ends and then says to discard any remaining cards in the line. My wife argues that I can't play that card because it alters the line. I say that first it says that the day ends. The line that states "discard the remaining cards in the line" is just a matter-of-fact statement because that day is over so of course you would discard the remaining cards - they probably didn't even need to say that part. My wife says her card supersedes mine because I can't play any card that "alters the line" including adding or discarding nobles. I need a ruling.

Here's the ruling from the High Court of Some Dude On the Internet You Don't Know: he's right. I'd suggest not reading any more replies to your post so that your cousin's husband call tell his wife there was a 100% majority in his favor.

I don't think this is explicitly mentioned in the rules, so I don't how official a ruling you can get ... maybe you wan't to start a poll?

My first gut reaction was "yes, you can play the card that ends the day", because what it does is 'end the day', not alter the line. But for such a simple game, that distinction is bit weird, so I would ultimately vote "no, the day-ending card alters the line and can't be played".

This is such a simple game.
The interpretation that you can't end the day because it "alters the line" is sophistry Keep it simple.

I'm with the "End of day card can be played" camp.

The card she played says no nobels can be discarded from the line. The card he played says to discard nobels. He can't play that card.

If you can't "alter the line" with callous guards by "ending the day" with scarlet pimpernel then you would not be able to "alter the line" by ending the day with Robespierre.
In fact if callous guards prevented "altering" the line in this manner what happens at the end of the day. You can't add new nobles to line because callous guards prevent "altering" the line by adding new nobles? So what happens at day 2 if callous guards are in play, the game ends?
Make a ruling but don't take it too seriously, remember to have fun!

Thank you. I didn't have the card names handy so I couldn't find that thread.

This is simple, the wife is always right, even when she is wrong, which she never is because she is always right.
Wait, I am sorry, you were talking about your wife.
