Dear Everyone,
I didn't anticipate writing this post, but after crawling through the forums I have discovered that there are actually quite a few helpful Photoshop-experts out there.
If you feel that you have time and a tiny bit of enthusiasm, I would be very grateful.
Here's the thing: my collegue and I are preparing a home-made expansion to the game of Small World, as a present for someone.
It would consist of cards, similar to Tales and Legends. The cards themselves will simply be printed text - but I wish that at least the backs of the cards would be "pretty". We will simply print front and back and have them laminated.
I thought I could create a nice back-of-a-card, but it turns out the only resources we have are Paint and Word; also, neither of us has any know-how at all.
I found a picture of the back of the Tales and Legends cards here: http://boardgamegeek.com/image/767729/small-world-tales-and-...
I was wondering if somebody could possibly replace the "Tales and Legends" text with "The GVH Expansion". (Alternately, any other card-back of your choice would be WONDERFUL, as long as "Small World" and "The GVH Expansion" appear on it in some way.)
The cards we print need to be slightly smaller than the real T&L cards, because of nonlinear lamination costs: 5 cm by 9 cm at most (that's 2 inches by about 3,5 inches), proportionately to the original card (if that makes things easier).

At this point I am assuming that you, dear reader, have EVEN MORE time.
We also thought up an extra RACE and an extra Special Power:
Race: Chief Economist Team (6/11) -- can attack regions which are not directly adjacent to it, but one area further (ie. it is harder to defend against; this is a bit like Flying, but not as powerful) - (btw I have a feeling I have seen something like this before, maybe in an expansion - but not in the base set, so no matter)
Special Power: Number crunching (4) -- when you have a prime number of territories (2, 3, 5, 7, 11, ...), you get an extra 2 victory points.
(I don't think I've seen this special power anywhere before, so maybe some people might like to try it?)
Well, if anybody feels like designing these, that would be absolutely marvellous. If not, we'll just use pen & cardboard, and hope the thought counts more than the design.
If I had designs I could get them printed as stickers I think, or maybe just paper.

Thank you guys.

I wouldn't have been in the least surprised if nobody ever found it worth their while to deal with my little problems, it was (is) a gamble.
I still think it was okay of me to post this thread anyway, just in case.
I don't think I could have done it any more humbly.
But yes, I suppose it is preposterous.
If you meant to make me feel bad about myself, it worked. I just wish you hadn't.

Don't feel bad for asking; I'd do it if it was within my skills to do (at least in a reasonable amount of time). Asking for help with something you can't do yourself is perfectly acceptable (in my book, anyway).

If I could, I would help you, but I think there are some kind fellow geeks to help you out.
Wait and see.

Can't help your with the Photoshopping but I can give a quick assessment of the custom stuff (both are too weak btw).

Unfortunately the sad legacy of Flying is it eliminates so many possible powers. This is a race who's ability is encompassed by flying so I won't review it further however it should be noted that races with movement abilities in SWU are normally granted 7 units.

Inferior to alchemist in every possible way.

Humour shouldn't need a yellow smiley head at the end to be recognised as such.
Lighten up. My car doesn't actually need cleaning at all.

Well as you may have guessed this is more of a fun present than a serious attempt at inventing great races. In any case you're probably right, and I'd change the number to 7.

OK, make it three Victory points. I think the Prime Number thing has potential.

How's this? It's 2" x 3.073" (keeps it proportional to original design)
I'm home sick with a fever today, and my head is cloudy. It was also a bit of a rush job, so it might need a little tweaking. Let me know if it works for you.

Nice job Mick!
everyscar,
Since the game comes with a blank tile, could you make a drawing or cut out some images to paste onto that tile? If you want to make some of the same shape / size, I used illustration board from an art store (Dick Blick) to cut the shape out. You could also use chipboard (which they also sell), but that's a lot flimsier.
My thought is that there are a lot of non-PC craft solutions.

Mick, this is amazing! We all really love it, just what we imagined. Thank you and get better soon.

Thanks for the tips. We are definitely going to use the blank race / special power tiles, if any design for them comes up, we'll stick it on top of the blank tiles in some way. If not, we'll just write the name on and maybe have a go at drawing by hand.

Thanks for the well wishes, peeps. I've recovered from my little illness and am (sadly) back at work.
Every Scar, I'm glad you like the card design. I took a few liberties with the colors and adding the banner, because it was much easier to cover the "Tales & Legends" text than to remove and replace it (sneaky Photoshop trick). I thought it looked pretty sharp, personally .
The fact that you're making a custom game expansion as a gift is awesome. If there's someone special enough for you and your colleague to put in that amount of time and effort, then I'm flattered that you've let me become a small part of it.
I hope the recipient gets hours of enjoyment out of your gift!

There is a "free" font that works well to mimic the game font in the files section. I think use that and printing on a transparent label or on some regular paper as well as printing some Economist or Number Cruncher image and cutting out a circle for the front and back will probably do a good job. I'd suggest glossy clear and white labels, but you're probably ok with glue and paper.
I just spent a while cutting out pieces of illustration board (dense cardboard), but now that I have a few of the expansions, I have a ton of those blank pieces too.

The font question is complicated by the fact that the text will be in Hungarian. Hungarian, impractically, has 14 vowels: a, á, e, é, i, í, o, ó, ö, ő, u, ú, ü, ű.
Very few fonts contain all these letters, with ő and ű being the most problematic, as they don't appear in any widely spoken language. At the same time, they appear 49 times in the card texts (I tried rewriting the text without them - it was a creative task, but untimately decreased quality quite a bit - also, it felt as if I were trying to trick plagiarism-software by substituting synonyms everywhere, I am sorry to say my students sometimes have a go at that.) We finally found a font that works, called Vinerhand ITC.
Glad you're better, Mick! You're getting a credit on the game box.
