i know this isnt the aim of the game, but I find that every single of my games so far have ended before either player has deployed all their pieces. this is not a bad thing. I'm curious. do folks manage to deploy all their pieces in an game, ever? (with or without expansions)

(with or without expansions) Having only played ~80 games, I think we have deployed all our pieces in perhaps 15 games, and nearly all those were back when we started (didn't know what to do), and in these later games (which tend to take a little longer).

It seems quite common to me that the game ends before all pieces are deployed. Only rarely do I see all pieces get deployed.

yes, that's what I was thinking.
now my next question is, which pieces are you usually left with?

One thing is sure: definitely not the queen.

To me it occurs often that at least one player has all his bugs deployed.
Playing against more experienced players it is really not an uncommon case that all bugs are used because both know better how to defend, so long term strategies are necessary. Games which last about 60 or more moves have a high chance to fully deploy all bugs.
The average playing time of a Hive game is 10-15min but like in chess the playing time is extended if two good players are involved. Then a game can easily last for an hour.
My personal record is 326 329 moves in about 3:45 h 3:42 h against ringersoll on Boardspace... - and yes: we used every tile available!

We rarely get to play out all the pieces too. However, recently we have managed to complete one such game. We are trying to make a video out of that game

Edit: Here is the video done by my Significant Other

I rarely got all pieces out as well. Then I started playing at boardspace.net against the dumbot (the LOWEST level AI), and regularly got beaten by it.
Against a human, I found this game became a race to get Ants out, and increase mobility. If I got an Ant out, my opponent would react, and try to get one out as well. We were two OFFENSIVE players (haha).
The AI at boardspace always started defensively (Spider, Beetle, Beetle, Queen), bringing out Ants later, and controlling the outside of the Hive. My attempts at an early win were met by pieces jumping out of the way, followed by his newly brought out Ants trapping my own pieces.
His DEFENSIVE start often led to a win, and ultimately, to him getting all pieces out.
Now - I am DEFINITELY no expert on this game (I get beat by something with 'dum' in its name!!), but this has helped me re-evaluate some strategy, and the idea that if I'm maneuvering my pieces by turn 4, 5, and 6, I will be out numbered shortly.
Just some thoughts. Fascinating game!
