Hello all - I've been looking into the game series the past few days and am totally chomping at the bit to place an order and get started. Unfortunately I see that they are making a 2nd edition of Awakening the Bear and I'll have to wait to get it (is it out February?).
So my question is - what is the best way to get into this series if you are itching to get into it quickly? Should I just pre-order 2nd edition and wait? Can I order Storms of Steel instead and go from there? If it helps, I am an avid board gamer and have also played Flames of War and Warhammer so have a decent war-gaming background.

I'm exactly on the same spot!
I thought about getting into SoS first, but I guess I'll wait untill 2nd Ed. comes out and then get AtB 2nd Ed. and Price of Honour.
I don't know if I will be into SoS but I surely want Guadalcanal and First Men In (because of the theatres involved)!

Waiting for AtB won't hurt, but SoS is fantastic in its own right. Both games have their own charm, and SoS has slightly more full-blown tank battles, while AtB has slightly more mixed unit battles, so whichever one you order first, you will more than likely get the second one as well later, so go ahead and get SoS first if you really want to start playing right now, but be ready for AtB 2ed!
Cheers!

I agree, buy SOS and wait out AtB, as you may decide to buy a 1st edition as I am sure many people will be selling the old copy to buy the new one.
SOS is solid and has the new ruleset, and if you go forward with ATB then you can use the SOS rules to play ATB

Anyone know offhand how many Price of Honor scenarios can be played without owning AtB or SoS? Perhaps there are enough in there to live with only PoH until AtB 2nd ed comes out.

None. You need either base game to play price of honour

SoS is great.
I know that the 2nd ed. AtB makes the SoS seem like the "old" thing. Really, the 2nd edition seems to mainly be bringing AtB into the new ruleset (which SoS has). I have played both, think SoS is the better game, and would recommend picking that up first (I feel that there is a bigger range of scenarios, from infantry only to grand Kursk tank action).
I will be picking up 2nd ed. AtB, but there is no need to wait for that.

I actually recommend starting with SoS.
AtB is a great game, but in many ways is more puzzle like and also has less tank action overall. The 2nd ed will make AtB better and streamline it, but I wouldn't wait.

I heard on the Dice Tower Video game review that Price of Honor reprinted all of the Awakening the Bear counters. I've got both PoH & AtB 1st edition, wonderful game and perfectly playable. I think waiting on the AtB 2nd edition might be a bit "cult of new'ish".
Did see AtB at 40% at D&J Hobby (San Francisco bay area) last night. A real bargin.

AtB 2nd edition will also have new maps and a few bonus counters.
However, you are right - with the Price of Honour your counters get updated. And besides, Price of Honour is amazing (that is where all the best scenarios are.) I highly recommend adding it to whatever game you get once you've played through a few scenarios of the core module.

Thanks for the advice guys! I think I'll pick up SoS and then go from there. Can't wait!

Getting into the series at this point is actually quite convenient. You know which games are coming up and the current lineup of games will be all standardized soon (the current lineup isn“t that big yet anyways). So, you can simply pick up the game/games that interest you historically.
I got into the game during the beta-testing stage (AtB 1st ed). When it became clear that I needed to spend a lot of cash to standardize the game (buy PoH), I decided to leave the series and just keep the original AtB as a tactical stand-alone. No big deal, but this is actually the best time to join the series if you are interested in the system.

Wiet,
I think that you will be very happy with the First Men In maps. I have received the first drafts from the artist. La Fiere causeway and Ste. Mere Eglise look phenomenal. Here are the games in progress. Awakening the Bear 2nd Edition Guadalcanal First Men In - Airborne Battles France and the Low Countries 1940 Kreta Under Burning Skies (Abyssinia and Somaliland - First game in the Afrika trilogy).

Wow, thanks for this info, Uwe! My situation is as follows: I'm not a wargamer at all, but would love to own at least one 'wargamish' kind of game. So it has to be easy enough to understand for a wargame-nooby, yet meaty enough to give me a satisfying thematic experience (because I like meatier, thematic games). The Conflict of Heroes games seem to fit these requirements perfectly. But, the WWII battles on the eastern front interest me less than the allied invasion in Normandy (for now, since I'm still a wargame and WWII history-nooby), so I've been holding out on a purchase ever since I heard about First Men In. THAT game would be my entry into wargaming, I told myself
Your mention of 'France & the Low Countries' is teh first time I've heard about that, and boy it looks like it might be an even better entry into the series for me personally...!
Do you have any projected release dates for these games? Thanks a lot.

Hey Wiet, good to hear you are getting into wargaming and that CoH will be your first. I'm looking forward to First Men In too. You may want to check out Awakening the Bear v2 as an introduction to the game. I've picked up all the CoH games thus far, and with all the new stuff coming up my wallet is going to "feel the burn". Dates for upcoming CoH and other Academy Games releases are here:
