I just played in a Catan tournament in my city and I stumbled in one house rule they said are also used in other tournaments around the world.

This rule states no one starts with any resource at the beginning of the game. So for several turns, everyone simply keeps rolling dice empty handed until 2 players amount enough resources to start trading.

Is it really how tournaments are played? I felt I was completely at the mercy of the dice for too long in the game.

This is not the case in any official Mayfair/Catan sanctioned tournament...

That sounds like a horrible idea to me.

I am sorry man. The tournament rules that I have seen actually speed up the game. Usually, you get an upgrade in 1 of yourminitial settlements to a city and maybe even an extra road.

What is your city?

Typically you replace the initial second settlement with a city, not one of your choice.

None of the Mayfair sanctioned tournaments play this way either.

Sorry if you thought I implied that because I really did not.

If I were talking about sanctioned tournaments, I hope I would not be using the word or other tentative wording on the post.

I am just sympathizing with the
OP who is a fellow Brazilian and had to endure these terrible rules. Reality is, I have no interest in Settlers tournaments.

The city is São Paulo, Brazil. The purpose of the event was to promote the brazilian version of Settlers of Catan.
I like tournaments because of the higher skill level you find there and the gaming experience is different. Sadly, it was poorly organized and skill did not play any role at all.
