My wife and I played Aton for the first time today, but were a little confused by the end game triggers:
"The game ends immediately if, when assessing the 1st or 4th cartouche, one of the four conditions for winning is fulfilled"
We played this as ending immediately if:
1. One player reaches 40 points immediately after resolving cartouche 1 and awarding points for it?
2. One of the other conditions (occupy one temple, occupy all yellow, occupy all green) is met after either player has resolved cartouche 4. In this case, if this is caused by the first player in the round, then the game ends without the second player playing through his cartouches 2 and 4.
Does that sound right?

We just got the game recently also but this is how we were playing, too.

Yup. It's why turn order can be crucial near the end of the game, as you can manipulate it so that you win before the other person has a chance to counteract you on that last turn.

Yes, just to follow up with Steve, I happened to win one of my recent games of Aton precisely because of turn order, because otherwise I would have lost. (I had to have a 4 in the second cartouche but I made sure to place a 1 in the first cartouche, and unfortunately for him, he had misjudged and unnecessarily put a 4 in the second cartouche, and was higher than I in the first cartouche).
It was a long shot on my end, but it was only my opponent's second game and we were both distracted because some other folks had just walked up watching the game....but I'll take it, since I suspect that I will have a hard time beating him from now on (he's generally a much more skilled gamer than I!)

Excellent! Thanks Kathy, Steve and Justus.
Our first play was a bit of a muddle, not really pursuing any particular strategy. I look forward to exploring this game!
