I've watched and read most of the reviews and they all seem to tell me yes. But I still can't seem to decided especially since it's a relatively expensive game. My wife and I are both Tolkien fans and this game seems to just ooze theme. Is it pretty good with only two players? Does it take long time to set up? I just need a swift kick in the hind parts to send me to one side of the fence or the other. Thank you.

If you both love Tolkien and are fine with confrontational games, it may be a good fit. Are you ok with long games? What about one with a lot of fiddly pieces and rules? I like the game a lot. My wife would hate it.
Not sure how helpful that is?

I actually think this game is better with 2 players than 3 or 4. The co-op aspect can sometimes turn into one player telling the others what to do, especially in situations where said player is more experienced than the others. One player as Sauron vs. the rest as the heroes works really well. If you are Tolkien fans, you'll really like this game. That being said, War of the Ring is even better, and with the 2nd edition out now, I would recommend that one first.

I've never played War of the Ring, but if you and your wife are into long, reasonably complicated, and directly confrontational games - jigmelinpa is right - I'd go for that first. Get the new 2nd edition.

I would recommend MEQ unless you are all wargamers. There is combat but not the clash of armies you get with War of the Ring. MEQ plays like you are reading a book about what happened during that time. I have only played it PBEM sytle using VASSAL but set up for the prepared would not be too bad.

MEQ and WOTR are definitely different games, but the setup and play time is about the same for both. I would argue that both games actually play like you are reading a book. They are both excellent games, to be sure. I just prefer WOTR. Read up on both to see which one would better scratch your Tolkien itch.

My bf and I play together, we really enjoy it. It does have a lot of various decks and pieces, so there is a bit of set up and take down, but if you get it all organized, it goes pretty quick. The board is huge and gorgeous, so as Tolkien fans you will probably love that.

Looking at your geek badges, I would say you are more of a MEQ type person. It isn't a deck building or buff your character game though. People that have tried to play it that way usually lose. There are quests, combat training (better cards), and skill enhancement but it isn't the main theme. If you get distracted, you will let Sauron's plots take over the game and nobody will care how cool your character was.
The characters play quite a bit different and the combination of them is different also.
The map is great. I am a big fan of hub and spoke maps and this one looks and works great.
If you are Risk, big armies type person, WOTR is more your game.

I think it's a good fit. War of the Ring really is a wargame, while MEQ feels like an adventure game. Remember, though, that's it's LONG and takes up lots of room. Consider a trade or a used copy if you're still not sure.
