Hello!
I am a fan of Starcraft, because of a gameplay: you have to gather resources, then you can build some building and then some units to attack other players...

I have Warcraft 3 board game (where gameplay is similar) and Civilization...

SOOO...I'm looking for more games with that kind of gameplay (gather resources, build buildings and then armies, attack... )

can you guys help me, please?

and yes...i have Catan too (but there is not combat..) and Risk (there is only a combat.. )...

You might want to check for example:

Shogun, you have to raise taxes and gather rice to feed your armies, but if you aren't careful you will have the peasants revolting against you. And of course, buy new units, defend and attack.

Warrior Knights, you ride around with your nobles, you can destroy or conquer cities, then there is a complex mechanic that makes every now and then for an assembly, players have to vote on new laws or offices that give players specific abilities (or disabilities). You collect money and invest in expeditions that might end in very lucrative outcomes or simply get destroyed (and money lost)

and of course, right down your alley ought to be:

A Game of Thrones: The Board Game (Second Edition), now the second edition containing some of the expansion modules. Conquer different terrains that provide you with more supplied which you need to muster more units. There are also ships that allow you to do surprise attacks with land units that can travel by sea with help of the fleets. Diplomacy is a big yes yes here, so talk and slime your way to victory, lie as hard as you can and make everybody believe you're a God-send angel who came to restore peace... or whatever...

EDIT: suggestion - Twilight Imperium (third edition) might interest you, sci-fi theme...

My suggestion could be inaccurate, but have a look at Galactic Emperor.

Let us know what you're getting at the end yeah.

Eclipse might work for you.

The Ares Project is also based on RTS games like Starcraft and so may well be a good fit.

Eclipse is amazing. Twilight Imperium is also good if you have a lot of time to play.

I second the recommendation for 'the Ares Project', I just got it the other day and can't get it out of my mind. Build your armies, Marines, Xenos, Psychic Warriors or Giant Robot! And Fight!!

hmm...very good games suggestions! thank you all...

i don't know...it's hard decision..

- warrior knights - are there some resources or something? how to build army there?

- runewars - game has sooo many mixed reviews..some say its great, some it isn't..damn..

- eclipse - hmm, didn't know that game yet..

- game of thrones - i saw the game board..it's static - what about game? i like games, when every game is something different (like in starcraft, game board is always different and so there are always different "scenarios" or situations)

i'm deciding between those 4 games..

For a bit lighter fare I'll recommend Nexus Ops. You buy units and you attack a lot, and though it in no way feels like Starcraft, it does have some similarities.

- Modular board
- Favors the attacker and attacking is really the only viable strategy
- different unit powers.
- scales well from 2 to 4 players

But combat is dice-based and overall it's a much lighter game (both rules and game length) than Starcraft. But it's a great game and recently been repbulished by FFG.

Runewars is, btw., a great game. But you should really try it with the epic variant since that allows the game to reach its full potential.

Warrior Knights is not like Starcraft where you need resources to build armies. Here you just need the money to hire them and on pay-day you need to have enough money to keep your troops. Also, here you don't have different units with different abilities, what you do have is troops with different costs and different nationalities, so when you lose a battle you might lose all troops of a certain nationality. Most importantly, you never have more than 4 armies, each one lead by one of the nobles (these do have special abilities but are the same four to each player), Now what this game has, and which to my mind makes it unique, is the Assembly phase! This is hilarious and totally ensures that no game is twice the same (and it's particularly cool with creative players. So let me exemplify:

every now and then (depending on cards played by players), an assembly phase is triggered. So all players get chits representing votes (add to previously earned ones) and the head of the assembly takes three decree cards and in order players use their votes to vote favourable or against these decrees. These simply modify the basic rules of the game, as for example may say that roads do not provide mobility bonus till the next assembly. So far nothing spectacular.

It gets much more interesting once offices are voted on. Some give nice bonuses, others give penalties, for example "Heretic" is a nice one, whenever a Heretic noble is attacked, the attacker gets one Victory Point... now, this is democracy, so the target of this card may actually refuse it. What happens is that if any player refuses something voted on during Assembly, that player is banished from the assembly! This means, that player suffers no penalties but also gets no bonuses from any new law voted on!

Now the best part! Free Laws, these little cards have no rules on them! The head of Assembly makes up any law he wants! That's right! If you like you can say: If this law is favourable voted on, I win the Game! And if he's got more votes than all other players combined... well, nobody will accept that law, players are banished from assembly and play ther game... you can also do laws like: Mountains may be trespassed! or Whenever a fleet is destroyed, all players get the investments back! etc etc.

You make the rules, you just need to hope it passes votes! This is just about the coolest aspect of this game, and if you look for replayability, look no further! You got war, you got financial management, you got risk investment, you got laws that flip the rules upside down!

I love this game!

A Game of thrones is different. This game is very strategic and tends to improve the more you play it. Here too you do not build armies with resources. What you do is, you conquer territories that provide resources, this allows you to build greater armies. All players may have any number of armies that are not bigger than 1 unit! the problem is having more the 1. you need supplies for that, so you can build greater armies, and this is where the power lies... the game is great because of the constant struggle for military supremacy!

Also, there are the three tracks that grand special bonuses for those that spend more "resources" (power tokens) on them. Those can grant you the power to decide ties, they can get you bonus for battles or let you get an edge during planning phase. The planning phase is done simultaneously and phase down by placing tokens on the terrains you want to do something on. So you can make promises to other players which are easily broken, and this is another of the strong suits of this game, diplomacy! You have to be really cunning and convincing, playing the game of your foes just to strike them when they least expect it!

I highly recommend you check out some PBFs or session reports, these might give you the insight you need (for these two or any other game your are considering.

Hope this helped

Pedro.

Regarding Pedro's take on Warrior Knights.

The base game is sort of broken. In that the victory point goal the rules lay out is way too low. But the game is long even at this low total. The big problem is that each noble you have can only make one move per turn. And this means that trying to start an offensive against another player can take an entire turn just to set up, before you can actually attack. And so it's pretty easy to get the VPs you need and run away, preventing anyone from catching you.

The Crown and Glory expansion, however, added in a new order which allows you to "unexhaust" one of your knights, so the additional mobility this puts into the game makes it work a ton better. Though you still need to add twice the normal number of influence per player to let the game's engine get going.

What Brad says might be true, I own the expansion as well. Although you might be right, the rules predict the possibility to increase or decrease the number of influence points according to the player's liking.

Also, playing time shouldn't be a problem since the game group in question doesn't seem to have a problem with it, being experienced in StarCraft means that many hours have been invested in this game.

It's important though that you (markko) know there is the expansion and that just about everyone who owns it is of the opinion that it improves the base game. Knowing this though, I think there is nothing wrong with exploring the base game to the fullest and finding out whether they think or not that it is broken as you say Brad.

I didn't, me and my group just didn't play too aggressively before but probably a bit more now with the expansion. It's really just a matter of knowing how to best play with what you got, and that's something I love about this game! It's so customizable even in mid-game that you can always turn around the tide to your liking.

Nevertheless, deeper looks into some threads and reviews here on BGG should provide the necessary info to be sure about this buy!
