Sorry to post what is probably something already asked. In brief, if I am going to the dungeon and monsters have battle effects which destroy certain items or people, will the effect occur if you withhold these cards from the battle.
Situation 1: Red Jelly (or something like that), destroys a weapon. If I don't attach any weapons (but do have them in hand however), must I destroy one anyway, or will holding them back keep them safe?
Situation 2: A monster will destroy a militia. Can I elect to NOT use militia that are in my hand to keep them safe from battle effect?

No and no. Your entire hand is revealed, and even if you don't use a card it will still be eligible to be destroyed.
Also note that the battle effects destroy the cards after you've calculated your attack value, so you still get the benefit of using the destroyed cards.

You reveal your entire hand when entering the dungeon. Any card revealed will suffer battle effects if eligible.

I think so, Brain, but if we have nothing to fear but fear itself, why does Eleanor Roosevelt wear that spooky mask?

This is an Official Answer:
You can not elect to keep cards out of the battle. You can elect not to equip them, or not to use their dungeon effects, but all cards in your hand are present. Thus, you can not avoid the battle effects which destroy items or other cards in your hands if the card is there.

Would this apply even if some other effect prohibits a card being involved in the battle (I'm thinking the answer is that it would still apply)

Yep! The card is still present.

You said "if the card is there".
What if a breach effect (say, Tyxr the Old's discard 2) knocks the card out of your hand before you have to destroy it?
eg, I have a "Destroy 1 Hero" monster in Rank 1. I blow it up and select a Hero to destroy. Then Tyxr forces me to discard, and I discard the condemned hero and another card. Do I destroy that condemned hero? How does the timing work in that situation?
(Facebook Thunderstone makes me discard before the destruction happens, and the destruction then doesn't happen.)

It's not explicitly stated, but reading the rules carefully, it appears that the breach doesn't happen until "Refill the hall" which happens after "Aftermath" in the new lingo (or after "Battle" in the old lingo). Thus the destroyed card can no longer be discarded, because it's not in your hand.
