I have a friend looking to get into Dominion, and he's asking for advice:
1) Where's the best place to get them? I have 5% off at CoolStuffInc, and don't mind him using my account, but if there's a better place, I'm all ears.
2) He wants to sleeve them. I explained that I use Mayday, but given the chance, I'd go back and undo that decision. Where can he get the right sized sleeves, and from what companies? I know FFG, but who else?

1) www.Boardsandbits.com is very competitive for just about everything 2) I've had both good and bad experiences from Mayday. Some of the standard Euro sleeves have some quality issues, for example splitting when sleeving or even being mis-cut and not fitting the Dominion card out of the box. But in general they have been OK. For the games I want to protect really well I've use a Fantasy Flight or Ultra Pro Euro Game Sleeve or Standard Card Game Sleeve, and I've been very happy with the result.

I always check amazon. That is usually the best price I can find on anything. I just did a quick search on Boards and Bits from the link above and the prices are about the same with a few dollar savings on one site or the other.

1) When I was shopping around for Dominion the best price I found was on Amazon. Mainly because they offered free shipping and handling with some deals. Right now it looks like there's a couple for $29 and some change with free S&H.
2) I haven't sleeved mine yet, but if I did it would probably be with penny sleeves. Simple because of the cost. Otherwise sleeving all 500 cards is going to cost more than the game did. I might as well buy a second copy and use it as spare cards.

2.) Mayday Games sleeves may have some problems, but they tend to be pretty good at resolving them for you. (I.e. shipping replacement sleeves.) I recently had this issue, and it only took them like two weeks to fully respond/send me new sleeves. Plus they're cheap!

FFG sleeves are incredible, but frankly sleeving a whole set in them will be as much as the game (around $25.)

Go with the Dominion Big Box from Amazon...
http://www.amazon.com/Rio-Grande-Games-RGG-425/dp/B003Y737CO...
Quote: Contains the core Dominion card game and the expansions, Alchemy, and Prosperity. Additionally it contains the Black Market and Envoy promo card sets and a full color play mat
$71.88 and you get the larger box that can store all of the expansions with a little creativeness. This is the way I went and I have no regreats.

Thanks to everyone for the quick responses. He's looking to get started with something along the lines of the Big Box, which I think is cheapest at CSI for me (with 5% discount, $66.50, and we have other friends who'll get it to free shipping).
And while the sleeves are going to end up being about the same cost as the game, he would still rather sleeve them. I explained to him my isses with Mayday, such as the Croke board, the Queen fiasco, etc. and he said he'd rather go with someone who wasn't them. I know FFG makes sleeves that are the right size, but I don't know if anyone else makes Euro sized sleeves.
Thanks for all of your feedback!

I thought this same thing when I was a Dominion rookie. I bought one set, thinking "I'll buy another when the time comes". Well, 500 plays in the cards are filthy, and stick like I ate jelly-filled donuts while I played (I didn't, btw). So I HAND-CLEANED them. Yes, card-by-card I cleaned them.
That lasted about 200 plays, then sticky again. I cleaned them again which lasted about 50 to 100 plays. Keep in mind, cleaning 500 cards and drying them is at least a few hours each time.
So I went with shields. I have re-shielded the base cards twice since then, doing heavily-worn shields on other cards as well. Now *ALL* th e cards are due to be re-shielded. So, yes, I could buy the game over and over, but at least shielding, I am able to re-shield just the heavily-worn shields. If I re-buy the sets, I re-buy it all.
Mind you, your mileage may vary. If you don't have compulsive game-groups who insist on Dominion several times each month, I guess you might not have the same problem

I find playing on a tablecloth greatly reduces the wear. Easier to pick up too.
