Hey fellow FTLer! Recent chat with Jakob put me in mind of the question: does you name and surname have any specific meaning / history (especially those with non-English names)?

And I know the next thing was answered 100 times over BGG but just for the FTL edition of it - what's the story behind your BGG handle?

From me:

1. Nadia in Ukrainian is pronounced Na-di-ya with i stressed and means "hope". I have a double surname (mine+hubby's), mine is Sadovnyk which means "gardener", and his is Chuchvaha which comes from Belorussian "of tiny weight" which is rather ironic in my case

2. nadgamgee is my shortened name + a tribute to Samwise Gamgee from LOTR.

Your turn!

I used to work in a hospital kitchen. I'd see all the patient names and I got their trays ready. Some of them we thought were especially funny, including someone with the last name "Sigafoos." Halo 2 was about to come out, and I needed an Xbox Live gamertag, so I went with it.

So, in essence, I stole my name from an old man or woman.

(Interesting footnote: my grandfather is in a retirement home now, and the room across from him is for E Sigafoos. It's totally possible she's my namesake.)

Umm mine... okey

1) I took my names, so... Virre was something I started to be called as a noicknamewhen me and some mates where to start a punkband when we where 13... it was legendary and had a logo... and never did a gig or rehearsal the name stuck online etc etc and then I come to prefare it, I mean it was my login... but you know Punk... And Linwendil is from Quenya and then go get a dictionary. Annergård is rather more interesting, the family history goes my great-grandfather had a common first and last Swedish name like Lars Andersson or something like that, then he was hospatilised by some reason with bad sights. The doctors gave him medecin but for the wrong person with the same name and he lost his complete seeing and changed name. Well thats the family history of it.

I just want to say, God, on behalf of all of us thank you for all of the good things we do in your name, like charity and forgiveness. That’s an idea we would never come up with. That’s for sure. You know that better than anybody.

I usually follow the rule from NPR's The Car Guys show while online - no last names. I was unintentionally given an auspicious name. Justin. The most famous gents with my name would be Justin (b103-d165 C.E.) A philosopher and a Xtian.

The joke used to be on my name day (June 1) "The O.G. was Bishop and martyr. I already am one and don't want to be the other."

It is the explination I always received and the internet agrees.

Halden \ha(l)-den\ as a boy's name is pronounced HAL-den. It is of Scandinavian origin, and the meaning of Halden is "half Dane". In ancient Britain, the Danes were fierce and frequent invaders.

I suppose, yes. Though I'm much more Scottish than Irish: my paternal grandmother was the only one of her family not born in Scotland. It's the most anglicized form of Conley you can get, though also the shortest, which fits with me going by Dan and not Daniel. (I once considered legally changing my name to just Dan but realized that was silly) Nobody can spell it right, as they always want to add extra letters or transpose some of them or something.

I spent some of the best years of my life in the Lincoln and Welland Regiment. A militia unit based in St.Catharines, Ontario. We were fondly referred too as the Lincs or LincsandWinks. Hence, the name. During the 2nd WW we were refered too as 'The Poachers'. The unit has a highly commendable record dating from 1794. It figured prominently in all wars Canada fought in, including the War of 1812 where our companies were the flank guards for the regular British Regiments and key in all the Southern Ontario battles against invading U.S. troops. Our unit figured prominently in the battles along the Northern French coast and the Scheldt during the 2nd World War. The battle honours are many.

It appears as though Rasmus is short for Erasmus (generally referring to Desiderius Erasmus the Dutch Renaissance Philosopher) who was named after St. Erasmus/St. Elmo.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rasmus_(disambiguation)

According to this: http://www.thinkbabynames.com/meaning/1/Rasmus it means beloved...

Hope that helps...

Traditionally, my name, Leonard, derives from Couer de Lion -> Heart of the Lion -> Lion Heart -> Leonard. I don't think of myself as Lion Hearted, but there you go.

I wish I'd have been more thoughtful (regarding my username) when I signed up at BGG. Honestly I didn't know I'd be here this long.

Brechtel-> According to my Grandfather is a Old German name referring to Swine herders.

So my name means God Rescues Pig Farmers.

My ID:BEevoLI is code for I Love Elizabeth Brechtel.
It originally was GEevoLI a name I came up with because I was intent on pursuing Elizabeth Gallant before I was allowed to pursue her... I didn't start on the Geek till I had married the damsel. cool

"The Mighty Pope" was a Canadian-Jamaican soul singer in the 70s. When my wife and I first met in high school, we gave each other a lot of joke gifts. On the first birthday I knew her, I gave her two records from a thrift shop: Richard Simmons' Sweatin' to the Oldies, and an album by The Mighty Pope. So there you go.

Jason is Greek for "Healer"

Novak is a common Polish last name that means, if I am correct, "Stranger, Foreigner, Outsider." It has to do with when the Christians first came to the region.

Oddly enough, I have Irish ancestors with the name "Halloran" (Sp?) which CAN mean "Stranger, Foreigner, Pirate." It means that in one region. In another, it means "Son of" someone or other.

jaynova comes from a video game I played on the Sega 32X. It was a space Tank game...the name escapes me. Anyway, I got the high score, and was going to put my name as "JNOVAK" but it only let me put in 5 letters. I liked JNOVA, or Jay Nova, because it sounds like I should be fighting space pirates (space Hallorans?) or something. I've been using it online since 1995.
