Just played the first round against a friend and the question came up, whether it is possible to simply discard a card in your playing area, to make room for a better card and not ending the game at the same time. Any thoughts/answers?

Nope. There are some cards that allow you (or require you) to remove cards from your tableau, but you can't just remove whatever you like.
