We were playing the Swedish translation of Cosmic Encounter today (I love this version, it’s way stripped down to basics) and we couldn’t agree on how the card “Hemliga Styrkor” works. This is this games version of the “Rebirth” edict.

In my old group, we always played that it meant that you could move ships from wherever to a planet in your own system, whether or not you currently had ships there. In effect, you got a base back. The card does say that “a player of your choice” but I just read that as you could help a friend.

Today, though, some new players interpreted the card as if you could “chase away” a players ships from a planet in your system to a planet in their own. I said: “let’s play the card as I always played it before and I promise I’ll ask on the geek.”

So the question is:
A) It’s optional to do this if someone plays this card on you, right?
B) The targeted player chooses from which bases, to which planet, right?

For reference:
The Eon set 3 text (according to The Warp fan page):
Quote:
Rebirth: Regain home base. One player may place 1 or more tokens, from bases, onto any 1 planet in his own planet system. Play on any player, just before a challenge begins.

The Swedish text is almost word-by-word the same:
Quote:

Notably, word “may” is in both versions.

PS
CE is the best game of all time.

Your old group had it right. Rebirth allows you to move ships onto a planet in your own system, and is usually used to regain a home colony that you lost. It does not remove ships belonging to other players.

Your answers A and B would be my interpretation as well.

A) It is optional - you "may" place 1 or more tokens
B) The choice of bases to move tokens from is up to the targetted player.

There is nothing on the card to suggest that a player is forced to remove any particular tokens. It is intended as a positive card for the targetted player, not somethign to force them to leave another player's solar system.

In a 2 player double systems game could this be played by a player to advantage his other power, thus regaining a home base for his other power?

I don't see why not.

I've seen it used to help opponents get their alien power back just in time for a critical challenge, usually when the game is on the line and that opponent is the defense.
