Axis & Allies Naval Miniatures: War at Sea last Sunday. It was my Royal Navy against the Germans and Italians in a roughly 400 point contest. The fleets were fairly balanced with the Axis more subs and the Allies more air power. The British cruisers were decimated early, but in the end their battleships pounded the enemy into submission. Love this game!

Hi guys, I played Rome - The Great Battles from Zvezda's Age of Battles series, specifically the Battle of Pydna (168 BC). Historically, it was an overwhelming defeat for Perseus and his Macedonian army at the hands of the Romans. But on this day, he seized victory and regained his honor.

Been playing and learning Squad Leader during my lunch break with a coworker. We played the "Kursk 1943" scenario, it was quick and very fun!
I printed a couple of Tactical Training scenarios and Wargaming Academy ones to introduce this awesome game.

Just finished a pbem playtest of Cuba Libre - my second finished so far. I never playtested it's predecessor, Andean Abyss, but I must say that I'm very excited about it.
It's amazing how many decisions and how complex Cuba Libre is, given the simplicity of the rules and the small number of spaces on the map.
I should be starting my third playtest of the game tomorrow!

Great game. I've heard that the campaign game favors the Germans but I've won the campaign game as the Russians in 42 so I'm not convinced.

My wife and I played our third game of No Retreat! The Russian Front. We enjoyed it more than the previous runs through. But at the end we were still frequently checking rules; making it a very slow game. The counter blow mechanism, that I liked on the previous plays, started to feel gamey as we both got the hang of sidling up to units and then forcing a counter blow. Decided to trade; we could have leaned a much deeper game with the time we've spent on it.

It's just on the edge of the wargame definition, but I played an outstanding game of The Republic of Rome last night. In the second last turn, the winning player lost a disasterous war against the Macedonians and dropped out of the lead. Going into the last turn, four of us were tied for 2nd, 1 point behind the new leader. Both people before me failed to influence the last unaligned senator. I had a blackmail card, and tried to steal a senator from the leader. I failed the roll, but his popularity and influence were ruined, and he dropped out of the lead. Now I was tied for first, until the second-last player drew an epidemic card and my faction leader dies in the plague. I drop from 1st to 6th. Scipio Africanus and Fabius Maximus should have died in the plague, bringing me up to fourth place, but we had exiled them both to crappy provinces a long time before. Wild, wild game and super close right down to the last turn. (And a simple combat system, so it's a wargame, right? Right?)

8/41 Near Gomel
17 ID marched as quickly as it could into the pocket being formed by Army Group Centre. A crossroad town turned out to be heavily fortified by Russian defenders. How can they fight so hard, despite already being beaten?
A Russian temporary HQ building was reported in the area and the company was detached to secure it. Assault Engineers were attached to give them the strength they would need for the final push.
Intel reported an enemy that would be brushed aside with ease after a huge preparatory bombardment.
The infantry spread out on line to scout ahead of the engineers and clear out opposition on the way to the objective. The "already defeated" enemy had hoisted 76mm infantry guns and 45mm AT guns into almost every available building. The German approach quickly became a mad dash through ambush alley as they sought cover in the stone buildings of the town center.
The engineers, having been blooded at Brest-Litovsk, stayed calm and reached the final assault point well ahead of the escorting unit. There was no time to wait, so they engaged the objective alone. By the time the escort had caught up, the engineers had battered back the first line of defenders and driven off a gun crew.
The rest of the company arrived with daylight dwindling. Caution was discarded and the final assault was launched into the teeth of the remaining defenders. As luck would have it, the building was mostly filled with the units shattered by the battle with the engineers.
The building was secured as the sun set and all that was left to do was to man the captured defensive positions, write the watch schedule, and call higher to let them know that the mission was successful.
Cpt. Meunch and his assault engineers at the spearhead of the attack, as the trailing sections catch up to launch the final assault. Two 76mm infantry guns pounded his position as he waited for the rest of the company. The fire and smoke to the left was started by the pre-attack bombardment. It relieved pressure from the assaults left flank.
This is the first game I used dry erase markers on my plexi and it really made a huge difference. There are so many ways it is useful, I can't believe I never did it before.

Just solo'd Sargeants Minatures Game by lost Battalion Games. Interesting game, but without the Expansion and the purchase of additional minatures the game becomes a card game more than a boardgame at a ceratin point in the game. That said the game has potiential as it develops. I bought into the game and definitely see the potiential where the designer wants to go with it. They produced several other micro-scale based games in board games, but they were missing something. in this I think they have found it. That said for marketing purposes I would have started with another title for the game, as it has nothing to do with the previous games both systematically and in format. The ranges for spotting an soldier are so large that basically anything on the board is spottable. That said it is a beautiful game that really pops. I am still hestitant to bring to my wargame club not because of the rules being too long or complex but the game board being too big and possible length of time setting up.

Solo'ed Saipan & Tinian, Island War Series - Volume I last weekend. I found the setup to be rather time-consuming for a small game, but it was fun to play. It gave me a couple of ideas to expand on the scenarios I am designing for Valor & Victory.

Friday evening:
No Retreat! The Russian Front - my third play. First time as the Germans, won the sudden death on turn 3. Now watch out, you need more than the listed VP amount. Very confusing. Also, I only won thanks to a card that let me move in the Russian turn to capture an exposed city for the final point. I like political CDGs and Combat Commander, so cards in wargames don't bother me in general, but in such a "serious" hex and counter, high scale game they really mess things up. Perhaps in time I will learn the deck and keep on my toes to mitigate their effect.
Twilight Struggle - I haven't played this one in a long time. I managed to win on the third turn as the Soviets. It was the first time I played the latest edition and I couldn't find it in the rules if we should play with both Chinese Civil War and the optional cards, or just one of these options to mitigate the Soviet advantage? We played with both anyway.
Yesterday we played Combat Commander: Battle Pack #2 - Stalingrad, the scenario that is played on map 1. I lost as the Soviets, but it was pretty close throughout the game. Still it seems very hard on the Soviets - they are outnumbered, outgunned, have worse leaders and are forced to deploy inefficiently (spread themselves thin). I was glad with my performance even if I lost.
