This is probably obvious, but I have read the rules twice and find nothing referencing the check markings on some of the locations on the board. Can anyone help out with this?

The Rogue character that comes with the game uses them in one of her powers. There are also expansion characters and possible global effects that use them as well.

In the base game, only the Rogue character has an ability that interacts with the Chest locations. Some of the expansion characters also interact with the Chests.
