Hi!
I start a game as the US, I have this opening hand:
Europe Scoring Asia Scoring Fidel* Vietnam Revolts* De Gaulle Leads France* Marshall Plan* Indo-Pakistani War Red Scare/Purge
Setup is USSR: +1/4 E.Germany, 4 - Poland, 1 Yugoslavia US: 4 - W.Germany, 3 - Italy
US headline "Red Scare/Purge". USSR headline "Socialist Governments" (removing 2 in Italy and 1 in W.Germany
USSR then plays "NATO" to coup Italy - succes on a roll of 3. Removing US and adding 1 USSR marker to Italy.
What do you do from here as the US player? And was it a mistake to use that headline for the US?
PS: I squiked out a win in turn 9. My opponent maxed out the space race and was stuck with: "Duck and Cover" + "Five Year Plan"

I'd be happy with the outcome. He's going to take 2VP at least on Europe Scoring, perhaps Europe domination, but you should certainly get Asia domination. Respond with Fidel: 1 into West Germany, 1 into Afghanistan. Score Europe ASAP, before he gets domination, while blocking him from Pakistan/India and Asia should be yours.
With your hand, I would have comboed my setup with a Marshall Plan headline. 3 WGER / 2 ITA / 1 GRE / 1 TUR, then headline Marshall Plan. And then see if you can hold RS/P for next turn's headline.

I'm anal about using the right terms to describe games and have posted an alternative glossary to the inconsistent sprawl in BGG's database and lexicon that is clear, accurate and simple. I care big time about my reviews, ratings and comments.

Either dump Europe Scoring now and play Asia/ME, or use Marshall Plan to get back in the Mediterranean countries and re-seal W Germany. You had a lot of flexibility there.

Purge is almost always the best headline for US in the early war. With that setup I would have continued also to Pakistan & probably a point to Iran with Fidel.
However (surprise coming everyone ) I would have done a different setup. This is a prime example of the advatages of leaving West Germany weak. Now your only "good" card to give up against blockade is De Gaulle. However its a card US wants to dump as soon as possible in order to get France cheap. Especially with Purge played playing it early almost guarantees FR for US. So with ITA 4, SP/PR 1, GR 1, WG 1 (or TU 1) you won't have to be scared of the blockade and can use De Gaulle instantly.

marshall Plan is also a top headline for US especiallu after the optionals, since it allows NATO. However ths time in order to keep Purge in hand you'd have to play Vietnam Revolts or De Gaulle as a second last card, either leaving you more open to Blockade or let Soviets to SE Asia early.
