Hi all.
I am finally taking the plunge into this awesome looking game from one of my favorite designers. Only one question left to clear up:

Did not take the poll cause it really up to you.
I just can say i went to essen this year and bought me the whole bunch. It was an essen deal, still expensive but the game is rather expensive in euro. I got base game, dragon expansion, three hero expansions, barbarian, errant paladin, and all painted figures for 145 euro. Only played three times so far. But i dont regret it one bit. Very fun game, engaging lots of teamwork, very well appreciated in my group. On tops of it i am kinda the most involved with games in my group, also like to think things out. In many co-ops i have to be very carefull to not start to dictate everything, in this one this does not seem to happen. Looks great, ok there are some complaints about board but did not mind this to much. Prepainted although not very high quality still add alot imo. Certainly the bosses :-)
If you can afford it just get them. Other option is knowing a good painter who can do them for you. Probably can get better painted stuff for about same price or even lower. To bad i lost contact with most people i know who paint.
If they ever would do a deluxe edition with new artwork and map i probably would buy it again.
Ok i will stop my rambling here.
take it for what it is, just my thoughts

I think the painted minis are a good deal if you are buying the Base game and Hero Expansions directly from Eagle - $145 gets you the game and the painted minis. It is only about $30 over the Amazon price for a ton of minis.
I personally would rather have painted minis or the basic cardboard figure in a stand over the typical gray mini -- too hard to pick them out for my old eyes.
The quality is nice enough for those of us who never bother to paint our own but I doubt it is good enough for the painters among us.

We use other companies' figures which we find much more attractive. We also replaced the minions and generals, primarily with Warhammer and Ral Partha figures. It definitely makes the game more fun -- but even without, it is. GREAT game!

I actually have several paints, bases, primers, sprays, pallets, and brushes.
Just missing... talent.

I like the idea of the pre-painted figures but the minions aren't painted so even if you buy them all, half your board is still going to be unpainted. I'd rather just have them all unpainted.

YMMV, but I'm perfectly happy spending an extra $30 to get the pre-painted minis. I'll use the 42+ hours I saved to play 20 more games of DotR.

15 Space Hulk Terminators. Total painting time: 1 hour. They're for play, not display.

Those look great!
OK, after about 45 hours of practice, maybe I could paint them in an hour.
Until then, I'll spend the $30.
