OK, so I've dug my old minis out, picked up a pdf of the new rules and can't wait to get back into playing. Local opponents are going to be few and far between, but not completely unavailable. Still I'd like to play more (and sooner).
Are there any online options?
Even if not, since the turns don't involve interrupting the other player, PBeM or forum should be feasible enough.
You guys answered blindingly fast last time, time to see if you can do it again.

If you're into running mercenary groups you should check out this!
http://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php/topic,1135.0.html
This is the Against the Bot rules that you use WITH MEGAMEK to run your own campaigns. Really awesome stuff.
You should also check out MekHQ that manages your mercenary force of battlemechs, techs, medics, etc.
You can get mekHQ at the same sourceforge page for megamek.

My favorite electronic version of Battletech was Mechforce. It was ridiculously awesome, but sadly, it was only available on the Amiga.
On the plus side - it's multiplayer (you would have to hot seat, though). On the downside, well, it was made for a machine decades out of usage, which means you'd have to download an emulator and a ROM ... :/
But until someone else puts in the hexes and the same engine for reload times, cooldown mechanisms, designing your own mechs and all that, it'll still be my favorite Battletech.

If you're talking about an online version of the tabletop game, megamek is the way to go. If you're referring to a video game that simulates things from a mechwarrior's perspective, you have several options, but I haven't dabbled in them since Mechwarrior 4. I know there's a Crysis mod out there that's popular, as well as two games currently in development, but I take issue with the way many of them handle the physics of the game.
For MegaMek opponents, download an IRC client if you don't have one. I personally use Xchat, but clients like MIRC are commonly used as well. Connect to the Rizon network and join the #Battletech channel. Then just ask away. We have a constant batch of players from around the globe that play against each other around the clock, so no matter when you sign in, you're bound to at least find some lurkers to introduce yourself to and ask questions of. We're glad to help!
As far as specific questions about MegaMek, you're better off downloading it, reading up all you can, and then ask about anything not already covered as well as things you need clarification on. If I were to cover everything here, I'd end up writing a novel. It looks daunting at first, but if you're already familiar with the core rules of Battletech, all you need to do is figure out how to do what you want to do in MegaMek.

Grabbed MegaMek and it seems pretty sweet. One question, is it possible to send saved games around (or similar) to use it as a PBeM tool in addition to live play?

Have you looked at getting an Amiga emulator?

You're not stupid, the official forums are just set up funny. Attachments to posts don't show unless you are logged in. You need to create an account/log-in in order to see and download the attached files. I can see them just fine.

Heres one of the more supported B-Tech MUX around. It has at least two graphical clients or can be played purely in text format.

Yeah, sorry I forgot to mention that. Dr Lucky is correct, you will need to sign up before seeing the files on the forum.
