I suppose it was actually a dream, but I was dreaming with my eyes open. I stared towards the window next to the bed, venetian blinds drawn, faint lines of light illuminating through each slat. Some deep, sinister voice was talking in my head. Trying to tell me to do something. I don't remember what, but I know it scared me and I didn't want to do it. My body was paralyzed--I was just frozen there staring at the window. But then I made said saving throw and shocked myself out of it. It was creepy.

Sounds like Sleep Paralysis.
Short form (from memory) -- during REM sleep your brain is throwing around massive signals ... if your muscles obeyed them you'd be thrashing all over the place, so somehow your muscles are disconnected so that you don't hurt yourself or seriously piss off the person next to you. Normally they reconnect before you wake up, but not always and for some people not often.

In Mythology, spirits in the form of women lured mariners to their death with a song that had a similar effect. It was said their voices were carried on the waves and they overtook a man's senses and sensibilities, commanding them from afar.
Never heard of any hanging out in Montana though.

The greatest trick the deep-voiced venetian blind sirens of Montana ever pulled was convincing the world they didn't exist.

There are also English and German legends about an evil invisible fairy spirit called a hag that will sit on your chest and give a sleeper nightmares. If he awakens during the nightmare, he will be unable to breath or sit up for a short time until the spirit has departed or been fought off.

Does your neighbor have a dog? Could it have been on the other side of the blinds? If so, it could be like Son of Sam, who claimed his neighbor's dog made him do horrible things.

Psychic dogs would be a rare oddity as far as I know, but there are legends of vampiric creatures that could change into animal forms of bats and wolves. In both human and animal forms, they were said to have a compelling voice and hypnotic eyes that can take control of a person. In almost all cases I heard of, the victim had no memory of being so controlled.
There are also tails of native american deities that would take the form of animals when communicating with their chosen priests. As far as I know this isn't associated with forced compulsion, so much as with direct communion. There are, however, similiar stories of similiar spirits being able to possess their chosen priests, temporarily taking control of their bodies to impart information or perform some act of purification. The use of masks in religion ceremonies were often used to represent this absorbing of "an aspect of the deity". As far as I know, it was always voluntary, however.

I have been subject to Sleep Paralysis dreams my entire life. Some are pretty elaborate but they always end with me being in a situation where I'm at risk of death but I'm unable to get my muscles to do what is required to avoid it. I usually end up waking myself by hollering(actually mumbling) for help. Sometimes there is full body muscle spasm as well.
I did not know what they were called until I read Demon Haunted World by Carl Sagan.

A friend of mine growing up told me the same thing he was of Filipino descent. Is there a US/European equivalent? Or is it an Asian/Pacific Islander myth?
Same friend claimed it happened to him once, and seemed pretty shook up about it. He said he woke up, couldnt move, and saw an evil looking dead woman sitting on his chest. He also said he couldnt scream and could barely breath.
Granted he did enjoy scary movies, so I have a feeling he was just having a dream about the myth and his body acted out the part based on what his head knew of the story.

Thats what came to my mind when I first read it. I think in England they call it the "old hag" but we don't have a term for it in the states.

I have had that a couple of times as well. It is freaky because the dream part tends to be hyper-real. I remember something setting on my chest and pulling my hair.
