It isn't an insult it is more of an inside joke. That has gotten new life recently.
A penny tip is not actually an insult UNLESS somebody has made a point of saying that when they tip .01 it is meant to be one. Usually they put it in their profile so if somebody goes to check on who tipped them their pleasure it turned to embarrassment and upset.
BGG does NOT actually allow this. When the Moderators become aware of it they take action. I recall it happening 2 or 3 times that I became aware of in my years on BGG. One guy had his tipping privileges totally revoked IIRC.
As you can imagine, I am not one of those people, that would be totally against my core personality.
Anyway, somebody else recently started doing this. Doesn't matter who other than it wasn't me.
And it obviously inspired Dar to turn it into a joke.
Dar was just yanking my chain since I was flirting shamelessly with him via Geekmail after his erudite reply to the OP. Something I do periodically when he amuses me.

Someone self-identified with a geeklist a bit too much, and when confronted with a dissenting opinion by another poster on that geeklist, felt the need to try and rally support here.
Then, when we (well, I), didn't agree with him, he "took his ball and went home". He then proceeded to act the victim in Chit Chat.

Ah, thanks for 'splainin. I sometimes tip 1ยข because I'm pretty gg poor and I didn't want to unintentionally offend anyone. I do a good enough job of offending people intentionally.
