Groundhog Booed After Controversial Forecast
There is a decision by Punxsutawney Phil and the groundhog was booed after making a controversial forecast.
Phil was taken from his den around 7:25 a.m. and then after some consultation, his handlers proclaimed that the rodent said he saw many shadows and we would have six more weeks of winter.
One problem: it was very cloudy in western Pennsylvania and the only lights came from TV cameras.
The crowd of 18,000 then turned on Phil and his handlers and booed them like they were at a Philadelphia Eagles game.

This is my philosophy... taken from the movie of the same name.
When Chekhov saw the long winter, he saw a winter bleak and dark and bereft of hope. Yet we know that winter is just another step in the cycle of life. But standing here among the people of Punxsutawney and basking in the warmth of their hearths and hearts, I couldn't imagine a better fate than a long and lustrous winter.

I could have predicted a mild Michigan winter. My son lives in Grand Rapids and we bought him a snowblower in November. Cursed the snow.

For real, why boo an extended winter when it 60 degrees! It's going to be 58 here in Indiana today. I do understand booing the groundhog tho. The one eating my barn is an ass.

Winter has only just decided to appear here. First morning this season that I've set off from home for work and it was below 0 Celsius (32 degrees F). Last year we'd had 3 or 4 weeks of snow and traffic madness by this time. Forecast is only for a couple of cold days and we're back up to 8C.

I boo the general hegemony of Punxsutawney Phil.
I went 22 happy years of my life imagining Groundhog Day as delightfully local holiday where local ecology, planetary movement and weather patterns all combined in one glorious moment of divination. The outcome was different everywhere and we all ruminated on the success of the coming year's bounty based on the tried and true assessments popularized in publications like the Farmer's Almanac but boiled down to the minute experiences of a small creature going about it's little day.
Then that damned Bill Murray movie ruined everything by popularizing those silly people and their ridiculous ritual. Now I can't hear, see or even contemplate the true meaning of a special holiday without a mention of this most banal place. Boo Punxsutawney. Boo Phil. Boo Media. Boo I say.

Um wasn't the movie based on that event because it was already a popular thing?

Maybe if you are east of the Mississippi, but out here on the West Coast I'd never heard of him. We don't have groundhogs aka woodchucks out here anyway. We got Yellow-bellied marmots aka the Rockchuck in these parts.

I like the movie also, but how in the world do you boo a groundhog just because the sun is shining and he can see his shadow?

Oh, I didn't think the booing was from that... life imitating Hollywood? That's too bad. The movie wasn't even filmed in Punxsutawney!
Well according to this table on Wikipedia, it seems Phil is in the minority for groundhog prognostications this year. MOst of the others said "early spring".
