Yeah, really. Not a surprise but a shame none the less. I have the 6th edition and although it been a while since I have played, it sure didn’t play like the FFG version. “What you say”! “FFG Bucks up a reprint of an old classic”? surprise

I don’t think I’d go that far. But we played the introductory game (which specifies which cards go into the play deck) and it was a drag.
The first change I noticed is that some of the cards now do double duty. Previously there were lots of number cards. These were used to increase movement, range, damage and other game effects. So you had a spell and you would add a numbered card to increase it in some way. The FFG version still has numbered cards (Energy) but there seems to be fewer. And the reason is they have “added” spell cards that have a spell effect and energy. This means that you can cast it as either the spell OR use the card for energy.

Now I didn’t count up all the numbered cards in the 6th edition nor have I sorted through the 168 cards in the new version. But the one of things that I truly enjoyed about the 6th edition was there were plenty of number cards and the decision process was how to use them. Now it appears there are far fewer number cards (now know as energy) and you find yourself without the ability to bolster your movement and /or spells. Net result- Slower game play.

Also changed (although not played with in our session) is the ability to create monsters to run around and attack your opponents. In the 6th edition, you could summon a monster and send them off to attack the other players. FFG’s version has you “Transform” yourself into a monster. While on the surface this seems cool. You are turn yourself into a creature and then go after the other players. But in practice, rather than going after your opponents treasures, the main focus of the 6th edition and still a primary component to winning, you are now chasing the other players down to attack them. Net result- Slower game play. Again.

I blame these “issues” on the new doctrine of “Victory Points”. Get two points and win the game. Thank god they introduced those . . . .

Previously the game was won by either capturing two opponents treasures and placing them on your base or killing all the other players. Now you get a victory point of EACH opponent that you kill and one for each treasure that you steal. These stolen treasures can be stolen back, and if they are the victory point is lost. Which, strangely enough, should speed up play.

I strongly suggest your play this BEFORE buying it. Or convince a friend to buy it play with him. devil

I haven't played the new version yet, but some of your concerns don't add up.

Firstly, I'd like to know the ratio of number cards to spells. In the old edition, getting screwed out of number cards was a royal pain. If most of the number cards were in the bottom half of the deck, the game played painfully slowly. I can't see how increasing the versatility of the cards by making Spell/Number hybrids would slow the game down.

Creating Monsters was an expansion ability, although I should stress that I haven't played 6th Edition. However, I'm sure that the ability to create monsters and the beautiful miniatures to be able to do that will be in the first (unannounced, but surely forthcoming) FFG edition expansion, as well.

I'm not understanding your specific issue with the Victory Point system. It should be faster and all logic suggests that a 4 player game will be faster if any given player has more possibilities to win. I mean, the old victory conditions still exist. How can the Victory Point system possibly make it slower?

Rose-colored glasses, maybe?

Looking forward to your reply.

Questions,

Was slower game play due to learning the rules at the same time?

Have you tried other scenarios? Did game play improve with alternate scenario play?

Would you consider this a filler game?

ANy information is appreciated as this was a game on my buy list and i would like to make an informed decision about it.

I would like to know how old the reviewer is. Please, if it's not a rude question.

I am not trying to sound condescending here but it does seem like the reviewer is about 13 years old. If he is not I apologize. I do think it would be helpful to announce how old you are when you review things because I don't like taking into account the reviews of certain demographics because I know tastes change as you get older.
Really? What on Earth would make you think he was 13? And I don't see much value in announcing your age/gender/hair color/rank when doing a review. Why does that kind of thing matter?

It's just the impression I get reading between the lines. I am thinking back to when I was 13. I was into battles and other stuff than you grow out of liking. I think it would be very useful to know the age of those who submit reviews. I know I am probably coming across wrong. You can ignore me but personally I would like to know how old reviewers are.

Good luck, but I wouldn't expect too many reviewers to open with a brief biography. I don't think you're saying anything wrong, I just don't expect anyone to do what you're asking.

Well, he has a "member of the community since 2003" badge and is a silver boardgame collector (250 needed I think), so unless he's totally faking it I assume he's definitely older than 13 ...

Well... Considering that the OP joined BGG in 2003, it would be safe to assume that he is at least 9 years old... Maybe 10.

I don't know, reading this I'm wondering how old you are...

I think it's useful to hear all these opinions, both positive and negative, so that others can make an informed choice.

That's because you are wrong and you're spouting bigoted garbage. Young people can say intelligent things. Old people can say stupid things. The important thing is to pay attention to the content that is written and not focus solely on the prejudices you bring with you.

I feel the need to jump in. The age of the op could not be more off topic. I am guessing this came up as a means to infer the op's taste in gameplay. If we could please get back on topic, I would love to hear the opinions of other people who have played the new FFG version who are also owners or at least big fans of previous iterations.

anyone liking the orig rules better should simply play using those rules...my two (2) FGG games arrived the other day, and i'll try my 1st play tonight (with my wife)...we usually play games in groups of 2-4-6, so i got a 2nd game so i could: (a) have a larger play area even if playing with 2 or 4 (i like large games/boards/areas...and/or (b) add more cards from the 2nd game to the 1st as needed (based on our pref)...other than my custom minis and die, there's not much from the orig i could use with this FGG edition (the cards i had made by artscow for the orig simply wouldn't match these, BUT i could use all those and none of the new if i wanted some of the orig "flair" from the orig game's cards)...

(over 13 by the way)

I don't think that you could summon monsters in the old base game. The FFG rulebook hint that you will be able to summon monster monsters in a expansion.

I'm glad that we were able to move on from the age topic. Now, to guague the review, what I would like to know are the following regarding the OP:

- socioeconomic caste (aggregate last 5 years tax forms are fine)
- political affiliations
- notarized certificate of IQ
- medical predispositions resulting in negative review of WizWar

Having these details will help considerably.

Did you play the non-introductory game as well? If so, how did that change impact play?

Let me know how this works out for you. I'm tempted to purchase a second copy to expand the game to 2-8 players (I could just paint the second set of player color discs) and/or a larger play area.

I thought that the press release of this stated that the old rules are included. Is that accurate?
