On the one hand the latest FAQ say that Mechs are treated as Ground Forces in regards to invading, and on the other hand it says that when participating in invasion combat they are immune to all abilities that refer to Ground Forces.

Can someone explain this contradiction to me? What is it trying to say?

Abilities such as the Brotherhood of Yin recruitment,Generals, bombardment, PDS fire, Dacxive Animators, Gen Synthesis, and Action Cards do not affect Mech Units. Mechs participate in invasion combat means they roll combat dice and may be taken as casualties (excluding abilities they are immune to). Unlike fighters participating in Invasion Combat via Graviton Negator tech, Mech Units may initiate combat without Ground Forces accompanying them and claim the planet whether friendly Ground Forces remain or not.

That quote also deals with the way landing Mechs works, ie you must decide before rolling dice which unit goes on which planet, and can't change your mind, if say someone uses their Diplomat ability.

The best way to think about it is this: MUs count as GFs for the purposes of invasion combat and planetary control ONLY. In all other respects they are a different unit, and thus bonuses penalties and abilities that affect GFs don't affect MUs.

Also effects that can revert planets to neutral can target MU's along with GF's. For example Local Unrest would be unusable on a planet with only an MU otherwise.

Local Unrest still taps the planet.

I can't think it that way, because if you say that they are GFs for the purposes of invasion combat that makes me think all sorts of aspects that are part of invasion combat: Bombardment, PDS, Generals, etc so I naturally assume those aspects then apply to mechs.

But no worries, I think I got it from Brian's answer above.
