I, like many others, picked up a bunch of the expansions in the holiday sales. I've never played Battlelore before and am just wondering if I should get multiples of anything before they are too difficult to find.
Thanks in advance.
(The only sets I don't have are Hundred Years' War, Heroes, and Dragons)

The base set is the only thing I might consider getting multiples of, or maybe some of the specific unit expansions if you want more halberdiers, Clan Chiefs, etc. AFAIK none (or very few) of the published scenarios require doubles of anything, and certainly nothing but the base game. If you like making your own scenarios, though, then you might want doubles.

I have two of everything except Heroes, Dragons, and Creatures.
BattleLore is good in that you only needed one of whatever expansion you were playing plus a copy of the base game to play any of the Epic scenarios out of a particular expansion.
Anything extra is really trade/ebay fodder.

If you have 2 copies, you can play Epic games, which is definitely worthwhile. Except for the base game, multiple copies are for do-it-yourself scenarios. I have at least 2 copies of most BL expansions, and even 3 copies of ones such as Hundred Years War.

Multiple copies are for gamers addicted to Battlelore or for those who want to make FFG richer. You don't need anything twice, especially since you haven't even played the game yet!

Even with Reluctant Allies, which was billed as needing 2 copies, you still don't need two copies except for some miscellaneous stuff - like lore cups, council sheets etc. The only unit you would lack is another Spider - which can be replaced by any other creature anyways.

So if I have the Epic Battlelore expansion I can get by without a second base set?
Thanks for the replies from everyone.

steinhauser wrote: So if I have the Epic Battlelore expansion I can get by without a second base set? Correct. There is ZERO need for a 2nd game if you have Epic.
Reluctant Allies, a form of the Epic game for 4 players states that a 2nd copy is needed. However, after falling for this marketing line, I went through and checked what was actually needed to play the official RA scenarios: a 2nd spider was the only plastic figure you needed. You would be shy 2 War Council sheets (which you can photocopy), 2 Lore cups (which you can use a small bowl if you want) and a few forest tiles (which again you could photo copy or use a substitute terrain).

It has been at least a year since I have played Battlelore. But I am pretty sure, if you play a 4-player game using the army cards to set-up, you will be needing a second copy.
If I remember correctly, each side can draw a full base set of any unit type except the blue footmen, who are in abundance. It is not necessarily going to happen in every game, but it is a possibility. I have painted 2 full base sets in different colours, with the blue footmen as an exception. I am pretty sure we have used more units than a single base set in several 4-player games.

Anders is correct - in a sense. There are the "Feudal Levy tokens" rules for handling unit shortages when playing Call to Arms, but many find these unsatisfying. If one is going to play Reluctant Allies epic games using Call to Arms without altering the rule sets given in the expansions, likely one would appreciate having additional base game units.
There are certainly work-arounds if a few to many of the figure expansions are also being used. One could get creative with the specialist deployments, etc.
I was hoping that the FFG figure expansions would update the Call to Arms decks to more evenly incorporate the non-base game units - and they do to a degree - but regardless, using the enhanced Call to Arms decks can also lessen the odds that Levy tokens will be needed.

If you bought a French core game, it comes with 4 anyway -- two English and two French ones..

I bought 2 base sets (one DOW English - possibly the last one sold in the UK, and one FFG French when they became available) because I'm greedy and you can never have too much awesome

We're talking board games. When does "need" ever come into it?
