Well, the new "The Thing" prequel movie is out. I missed whatever ramp-up it had, if any, and I was surprised to see it on cable. I won't spoiler it for those who still want to see it. While it's hard to watch a movie based on John Carpenter's opus when you essentially know the punch line (i.e. don't trust anyone), this one wasn't too bad. And it's only 90 minutes, so it gets right into it without a lot of fooling around. There were definitely some moments with the new Thing special effects that were very cool and made the hair on my neck stand up.

I agree. They got the main thing right that is essential in any sequel/prequel; always respect your source material.

They didn't screw with the timeline of events and covered things that we see in 'retrospect' in the original film nicely.

John Carpenter it's not, but it does deserve some recognition.

It got a lot of flak for being unoriginal; but I thought it was a pretty great middle ground between a remake and a prequel. It's not covering a lot of new ground but totally gives you a total of ~4hrs worth of Thing to watch. Even more if you watch the actual original http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0044121/. I'm intending to do an all Thing movie night sometime in the near future. Holler if you're in 979.

I liked the film, despite its flaws - it was more THING, and you can't bottle that. I think it will grow on me with repeated viewings.

I'm a huge fan of the John Carpenter version. So while I was excited to see that a new film was coming out I was nervous that it would...well...suck. However, after seeing the film I am glad to say that while it is not as good as the 70's Carpenter version, they stayed close enough to the source material to keep me interested. The cast was good and the CGI was incredible. Still had shudder inducing moments but not a lot of shock value unfortunately. Overall, I enjoyed the film. I would give it a solid 7/10. The 70's version gets a 9.5/10.

Definitely worth checking out.

I saw the prequel Thing movie opening day. My friend and I were extremely excited to see it since he is a huge original Thing fan and I loved the original movie. The new Thing was a total flop for both of us.

I think the major problem was that I didn't care about any of the characters. Nothing drew me in. Most of the characters seemed to only exist just to be fodder for the alien to slaughter. I cared about the characters in the first movie and I think that is why the Carpenter version was such an amazing movie, his movie wasn't about the alien as much as it was about how the humans responding to the alien. This version just seemed to focus on cool effects and lack luster characters.

At some points during the new movie I felt like I was watching the original movie. I'm glad that they kept close to the source material and incorporated the parts from the original movie like the axe in the door but there were parts of the new movie that felt like they were taken directly from the original. I wish they had done some more original things with this movie. It just felt too unoriginal to me.

At least the Norwegians spoke Norwegian.

5 out of 10.
