I sleeved up the first scenario in the Khazad-dum expansion today and gave it a go solitaire with the deck which was successful in its most recent game against the Trolls... surely they'd have a fair chance against the goblins of Moria?

In the first game, a Goblin Follower, ignoring the "we don't engage you" rule of the first location, jumped out in front of my on the second turn. Beravor blocked it, expecting to take one damage. I was rather disconcerted when the Shadow card added 3 to the goblin's attack and Beravor disappeared into the discard pile.

I was even more disconcerted when, on the next Encounter draw, a rockfall hit Glorfindel. Only discarded on a card draw of 5+? Surely he was safe! Not so, as Gandalf was on top of my deck... two heroes down and a goblin attacking Eowyn, I knew when I was beaten, and reset the deck.

The second game got further without anyone dying, but two Goblin Followers arrived very early on, causing no end of problems. Gandalf arrived to get rid of one, but the other was protected for two turns in a row by Shadow cards that prevented all combat damage to him! Meanwhile, he started eating the few allies I was drawing... not that were many. And the goblin hordes were waiting for me in the dark. If I completed East-Gate, they'd all attack and I'd die, but I couldn't draw enough allies or strong enough ones to help me. Eventually, one by one, my heroes fell, and my threat rocketed up - thanks a lot to three Doomed 2 card-draws. It was almost a relief when I hit 50 Threat, and the game was over.

It's quite obvious that I need to build another deck if I'm to get through the challenges of Moria...

There are some really, really mean cards in this scenario indeed. I know how you are feeling, our win:lose ratio with this is like 1:5

Beravor, Eowyn and Glorfindel have no place in the Mines - bring on the Dwarves!!
