Today I got to play my first 2 games of Blood Bowl thanks to
Derek
United States Omaha Nebraska
. He was a great teacher and I was hooked on the game right when he set up the board and showed me all the teams he had. He explained all the rules and player abilities to me and we picked out teams. I took the Humans and he played the Orcs
I apologize ahead of time if I get some of the player names wrong or talk about the Tackle Zone when I mean the End Zone There is alot of stuff to take in for the first game.
The brutish Orcs kick off and after the scatter roll the ball bounces right next to my Blitzer who successfully picks it up and is off to the races down the near sideline. I have a Catcher and 2 Linemen in position to try to block and clear the way down the sideline. I use a Linemen to Blitz and knock his Catcher out of the way and back. I am able to get my ball carrier past midfield and into the Orcs side of the field before I run out of movement. It was a great first series as I hit every block and dodge roll I tried. This game is really COOL so far.
Derek and his Orcs went on Defense and his number 1 Blitzer fell while trying to Blitz my Catcher. A deadly injury happened as his Blitzer landed on the ground with the metal point of his own helmet impaling him through his green bloody heart and KILLED him, knocking him out of the game. WOW I love this game already. With one of his star players DEAD and obviously OUT for the rest of the game, the Humans went back on offense and moved straight down the field doing a sommersault into the endzone for my FIRST Blood Bowl touchdown! Did I already mention that I am loving this game! What do you mean there is NO extra point in Blood Bowl and I ONLY get 1 point for a score? Is this FOOTBALL or SOCCER?
I set the Humans up on Defense and kick off. I try to place it near the far sideline. I get very lucky and the ball scatters away from those clumsy Orcs and back toward midfield. The Orc Thrower moves over and tries to pick the ball up, dropping it twice. The Humans smell burning Orc Flesh and move in for the kill with my Catcher scooping up the ball. I form a cage around him with my Blitzer and a few Linemen. My Thrower comes up from behind to help guard my flank. My other Blitzer does his Blitz and blasts an Orc Lineman into oblivion. I roll a 10 on the Injury roll and then a 12 on the actual Injury. Wham Bam, another dead Orc, out of the game. The only good Orc is a DEAD Orc was my team's motto.
We settle into a bit of a stalemate in the middle of the field as we have several players both Humans and Orcs face down on the Pitch. The Orcs get the ball back and are trying their own run up the sideline when my Blitzer comes out of nowhere and BLASTS the Orc Runner into the sidelines. The crazy fans watching the game from the sideline start kicking and beating the poor Orc, and decide to have a Orc-beque. They kill him, cook him and start selling Orc steaks and burgers. He is the 3rd Orc knocked out of the game. Have I mentioned that I am totally loving this game and actually cheered out loud when the Orcs fumbled?
I score a 2nd touchdown right before halftime on Turn 8 and go to the locker room with a 2-0 lead. The 2nd half was a defensive struggle with no scores although 2 of my Linemen and a Thrower got knocked out of the game along with another Orc. The whistle blows and I do my victory dance as I win my first ever Blood Bowl game 2-0, having knocked 4 Orcs out of the game. Did I mention I am absolutely hooked on this game?
Game 2
Derek asked if I wanted to play a different team, saying that he wanted to play his beloved High Elves. I told him go ahead, I am sticking with the WORLD CHAMPION Humans. He smiled and said, I should tell you that the Elves are faster and have more agility than the Humans. Doesnt matter I snarled, get those pointy earred sissies of yours on the Pitch and lets play some Blood Bowl!
I kicked off to to those scrawny tree dwelling freaks. By Turn 2 the Elf Thrower had successfully completed a pass over the middle to one of his fast Catchers and by Turn 3 the Elves were singing Sweet Home Alabama in the endzone. Well there goes my shut out streak
I got the ball back but had very bad luck trying to sneak through the Elves tackle zones. My Thrower gets clobbered by the Elf Blitzer and loses the ball in the process. He took a bad fall and gets knocked out of the game. The Elves quickly prance and dance around heading toward my endzone. 2-0 Elves
This was not going to be as easy as the first game, maybe I should have switched teams. Here comes the coolest play of the day. The Elf Thrower completes another pass to a wide open Catcher who uses his last movement space at the 2 yard line. Oh, oh, a 3-0 lead will probably be impossible to come back from. Derek decides to get greedy and try to put me away. He announces that his Catcher is going to do a "Go For It Roll" to try and make it into the endzone. He rolls a ONE and drops the ball, he trys agains and rolls another ONE, scatter time as the ball bounces back toward my Thrower who was trying to chase him down.
My Thrower successfully rolls to pick up the ball and he snatches it and starts running toward midfield. I move him the maximum movement and throw the ball to one of my Catchers who is behind the main line of Elves at midfield. I get out the Pass Ruler and it will be a Long Pass, plus I will have to avoid an interception. I throw the ball Accurately by rolling 6 and the Elf defenders fail at the interception attempt. My Catcher goes up and snags the ball in full stride. He runs 8 spaces to my 2nd Catcher and hands him the ball, he makes it to the 1 yard line and of course I roll the "Go For It Roll". TOUCHDOWN for the Humans. "We Are the CHAMPIONS of the World" plays over the loudspeakers. Oh wait we are still losing 2-1 There were no more scores after that and the Elves held on for a 2-1 victory.
WOW, this game is an absolute blast. I cant wait to play again. If you have never played it, find someone who has and give this game a try, you WONT be disappointed.
Props to Derek for being an excellent teacher and being very patient with all my questions.

I had a good friend walk me through a few games, he played his Orcs, and I played Dwarves.
I am totally with you on how freakin' fun this game is.
I've played Skaven, and now play Ogres (a huge, huge challenge), and this game, in my opinion, only gets BETTER when you start playing in a League and the stats go up.
I've turned my grown son on to BB -- a tough act, since he grew up in the 'video' game world, and he is hooked.
He plays Norse and I play Ogres, and we have an absolute blast.I have never played a game where you can have so many challenges, nothing is EVER 'guaranteed', and you can fumble on the 1 yard line, and have ton of laughs while doing it.
My friend that taught me, played Humans for one game when I first decided to play Ogres. He had one Ogre on his team. He rolled -- no joke -- a '1' eight - 8 - times in a row, used up all of his rerolls, and he got so mad that he threw his die acorss the game store and hit another player (accidently). I still lost the game, but laughed all the way home. I think we only played one more game together after that. I never rolled a '1' once on my Ogre team that game. Ogres have a special rule called 'Bonehead' that before any declared action, the player musy roll a 1d6, on a result of a '1' the Ogre has forgotten what he was going to do, and essentially can't do anything for that turn.
Thanks for the great post.

What is the cost? Is it a free download or do you have to buy the program? I would be very interested in a Beginners League. I am soooooo hooked on Blood Bowl. It has been a long time since I played a game for the first time that I enjoyed this much and couldnt wait to play again.

It's free, it basically runs as a plugin triggered by your browser, so there's no download other than to click a link and allow a java client to run. All the teams and statistics, as well as scores are kept server-side, so all your team management is done through your browser.

The skill level of most people at fumbbl is quite high, but there's also no better way to learn than to see how really good players play.
I'd recommend to try different teams and see what the pain points are with them, so that you know how to play against them when you face them. Seeing how other people beat you easily when you play a certain team, just gives you ammunition on how to beat that type of team later when you face them with one of your other teams (or your "main" team).
