I have spoken with FFG and they gave their agreement for an on line version of Civilization, as long as no money is involved (no donations, no ads, no fees). Unfortunately, the intellectual property belongs to 2K Games and I couldn't get anyone there to talk to me- hence, such an implementation cannot be called "Civilization".

With that said:
1) Would people be interested in an on line implementation of Civilization? I was thinking of two versions, a live version (similar to BSW or the plethora of Dominion implementations) and a turn based version (like the TtA implementation, or the old RftG server).

2) Would people still play if the game is re-skinned? I cannot call it "Civilization" and I cannot use any of the FFG art. I would either completely re-skin it with a new theme (a space theme, maybe?) or rename it (to something like, I don't know, "Call to Power" ;-) Or "Generations" or whatever).

Don't see why you couldn't call it simply "Civilization" as the title of the board game is actually "Sid Meier's Civilization". Or just pluralize it.

Regardless, the name's unimportant. People would play it if it was good. Looks like a very difficult game to program. But you'd know better.

So an online version of a boad game that reimplements a video game! Wonder if someone will make a board game based on your online version?

As stated above, the video game was based on a board game ;-)

Right! And interestingly there was another video ame based more directly on that Board game thus making things more interesting.

This would be great. I really hope you implement it like BGO (web-based, not standalone program). It would really help since interest in PBF here is great.

As for the name, it won't really matter since TTA got online game named Boardgaming-Online that is so generic, and it's still known.

I have the computer version (a couple actually)...but an online version based solely on the board game would be great! Something like brass.orderofthehammer would be ideal

Given their expansion into iOS Apps, this seems like it might compete with future products directly. I'm surprised they were OK with it.

Which iOS apps did they release?

That leaves out things like CivNet, Call to Power, etc. on the computer game side and other boardgames that don't seem quite so directly influence by either Avalon Hill's Civilization or the Sid Meier series.

Because just the word "Civilization" is a trademark of Take-Two Interactive.

IANAL, but I think that's probably still too close to the trademark.

I'll probably play it. Also let us know if you need help creating GUI components and other graphics, which I could probably help with.

What kind of environment will you be developing in? Would you do all the programming yourself or will you be looking for help?

I was thinking of doing it in Python and using Google Apps as the server platform. I think I'll start with a basic infrastructure and then I might put it on line and let people tinker with it further. I would definitely need help with GUI and other graphics (since I'm not allowed to use any of the game's).

I would like to assist with the project if it were done in JavaScript/jQuery & PHP. I've tried extensive stat sheets that'll help players, but it pulls you away from the game too much and just created a simple Capital/City stats/turn tracker.

I have one request, I need all the images used in the FBG that I've seen being played here (and that I would like to participate in).

The design part is always simple, but the logic rules are a difficult animal all together. Normally a moderator or Game Master controls the game preventing the players from cheating. The Culture cards tend to extend the coding(where I always get stuck), and testing process since they are the interrupts that change how the game can look and play.

If anyone else has ideas that can help get this project rolling that would be cool.

Another future goal is to turn a simple stats tracker into a free Android app (sorry iPhone uses I prefer Java over Objective-C coding).

How about: Civilized Nations? ninja (If you read it quickly it almost sounds like the other names...)

Right now my plan is to write this in Python; I believe that will be the easiest language to work in. The front end might require JavaScript and PHP, though.

I do not have FFG's permission to use any of the game's art in the on line version. Everything will have to be taken from elsewhere.

Our group has some ideas on implementing interrupts. We're still thinking about that, since it will influence the development of the engine.
