Tried finding a recent post about this but failed so I'll ask anew...can this game be effectively played solitaire or do the game mechanics make it impossible?...thanks

You could play it solo to get a feel for how it works.

Well you can play it online if you dont have an opponent... And if you really want, you can set up a game and move pieces while playing online... I don't think this game makes very good solo play.

Too easy to anticipate what your "opponent" is going to do because you've seen his cards. Everything would be reduced to a dice rolling contest.
Randomise card hands after each turn?

the only solitaire rules I know are these http://www.boardgamegeek.com/filepage/10364/wotr-cooperative... but never tried it myself, it seems rather complex.

You have to be able to do the "split your brain" trick a bit when playing combat and event cards, but otherwise I think the game works really well playing both sides.
I think the amount of randomness is just about perfect for solo play--there's enough randomness in the game to keep things fresh and exciting even when you know what your opponent (you) wants to do, but it's not so random that you can't use solo games to intentionally explore new strategies.

I agree with Miljenko. Use the online client and play against a real person.
I played solo to learn some of the mechanics and then tried a few full solo game plays. The tactics used were artificial since I knew what cards each side held.
I love this game. It is my favorite game. But I would choose something else besides war of the ring if I had to play solo.

the game is still very satisfying played solo, imho.
i find that the only thing that really suffers is card management -- eg, knowing one side has a card that cancels the other's out. fortunately, that doesn't happen too frequently and card management isn't the prime mechanic of the game. (it could conceivably even be dropped to simplify the game.)
Also, as the game situation change over time, the value of cards also change. eg, you might find a card that one side desperately needed to play on turn 2 (but can't because of situation above) is not needed the following turn.
There's so much other good stuff going on with this game. The two sides have asymmetric goals, and their own separate resource pools that influence how each will accomplish those goals. To me, that makes this game highly solo-able.

I can respect those who want to play solo. However, since the online client is freely available, why not choose that option?
I must be honest though. I've got a regular WotR opponent and have the luxury of playing at least 3 face-to-face games a month.
