Prior to the update, my friend and I would quite happily take weeks to finish a game - 1 or 2 turns a day.

After the update this seems like its no longer possible? We've each accumulated a number of forfeits, and are wondering is there any possible way around this?

You need to up time limit for your game to the maximum when creating the game and that should cover it of you are making one or two turns a day.

I have already tried this to no avail - is there no way to disable this?

the maximum setting is 14 days, which means each player has 14 days to complete their turns. I am not sure how you could be running out of time if you make one or two moves a day.

There is no way to turn off this setting though. Unfinished games clog the database and diminish performance, so they implemented the timer system.
