Whew! I think that was my 5th or 6th game and finally things started to click - I moved faster through the world, gathered better loot, only fought orcs or adventure sites if they were going to really help me level up, and generally played much better.

The endgame

I played Arythea and was lucky enough to get a skill which allows you - once per turn - to play a wound card sideways as a "+2". This turned wounds from something to be avoided into a useful tool to add flexibility to my hand.

Embrace the pain!

I had to sacrifice a brilliant artifact (Horn of Wrath) relatively early, in order to kill a draconum guarding a ruin - the reward for which was 2 artifacts (Banner of Fear and Bag of Gems). I'm not sure if that was a good deal or not but the Dragon was going to smack me down unless I got 9 siege damage on him before he woke up.

I will admit I toned the cities down 1 click - the first was a level 4 red city, the 2nd a level 7 blue city. The biggest challenge was navigating around near the cities as there were several draconum lurking around...

Here be dragons

However the card combo below allowed me to evade the dragons, or ensure they didn't join the fight when assualting cities.

By keeping Underground Travel in the spell offer and using it 3 rounds in a row using the basic Magic Talent action, I could tunnel around the place like some kind of blood sorceror mole.

2 of the 4 guardians of the final city fell to an initial volley of 12 siege damage (Mana Thunderbolt and Ice Mages) followed by using the Banner to scare some gunners into not attacking. A Determined 6 block of the remaining crypt worm allowed me to go all-out attack to clear the city out and win the day.

Final score of 151 fame.
Amusingly, I scored -16 fame for having 8 wounds at the end, so that tactic might not be so great in multiplayer!

I absolutely adore this game. Every other solo boardgame I've played (including good multiplayer games like Labyrinth) has felt mechanical and disappointing single player. Mage Knight solitaire feels like this is the proper game.

In fact, I think it might even be annoying to have to wait for someone else to play!!! No that's not true, it would be fun to smack them down.

Anyway, tomorrow night I will play again with Norowas and the cities at their recommended levels of 5 and 8.

Great game. Bring on the expansions.

My first game was with Arythea and I used that same Wound skill to my advantage as well. I had 14 wounds at the end for -28 points but I didn't realize that wounds were used in scoring or I may not have been as eager to take them.

This is the only game that I actually want to play solo. I just played earlier today and I think I am going to set up another game now. It's really that good!
